INTRODUCTION ON ENGINEERING DRAWING

This assignment was given to us by Sir Saini before the school holiday . This
assignment sole purpose is to teach us on how to draw isometric projection ,
oblique projection , perspective projection.

An engineering drawing is a document that communicates a precise description of
a part. This description consists of pictures, words, numbers and symbols.
Together, these elements communicate part information to all drawing users.

Engineering drawings are often referred to as “blueprints” or “blue lines”. It is
used to fully and clearly define requirements for engineered items and is usually
created in accordance with standardized conventions for layout, nomenclature,
interpretation, appearance, size.

ENGINEERING DRAWING USED AS A MEAN OF COMMUNICATION

Engineering drawing is not only the province of the draftsperson. It is the language
of the engineer. It is their means of developing and recording their ideas, and
conveying them to others.

The best ways to communicate one's ideas is through some form of picture or
drawing. This is especially true for the engineer. Words are not the natural
language of engineers. Drawings are their prose, mathematics their grammar and
differential equations their poetry.

Engineering graphics is an essential course offered at an early stage in engineering
education and is used as a support in other courses.

The details of construction or fabrication are conveyed with the help of drawings
showing top view, front view , side view and sectional view which are required by
architect etc.

ORTOGRAPHIC PROJECTION

Orthographic projection (or orthogonal projection) is a means of representing a
three-dimensional object in two dimensions. It is a form of parallel projection,
where all the projection lines are orthogonal to the projection plane, resulting in
every plane of the scene appearing in affine transformation on the viewing
surface. It is further divided into multiview orthographic projections and
axonometric projections.

• TOP VIEW

• SIDE VIEW (left and/or right hand view)

• BASE/SECTIONAL VIEWS

 The right-hand side view is on the left-  The right-hand side view is on the right-
hand side of the front view. hand side of the front view.

TYPES OF LINES USED IN ENGINEERING DRAWING

The diagram below shows the types and thickness of lines used for various
purposes. Each line is used for a definite purpose and it should not be used for
anything else.

Lines can also be classified by a letter classification in which each line is given a
letter.

PICTORIAL DRAWING

Pictorial sketches often are more readily made and more clearly understood than
are front, top, and side views of an object.

Pictorial drawings provide a 3D image to help understand a drawing

The most common pictorial drawing is the Isometric drawing. The isometric view
provides a likeness of the 3D object and should be drawn to provide as much detail
as possible. The lengths of lines are generally the true length of the object.
(Sometimes the view may be scaled)

Perspective drawings provide the most accurate view of an object but the
measurements are not true lengths.

Axonometric (planometric) views are often used on house plans to show room
interiors.

(b) Oblique projection

(c) Perspective projection

(d) Planometric projection

ISOMETRIC PROJECTION

A trained eye and good imagination will be able to understand the three
dimensions of an object. Several orthographic views on different planes are to be
drawn to understand fully an object. But in isometric projection, only one view on
a plane is sufficient to represent an object in its realistic appearance. Anyone can
understand by looking at a view what the job is by isometric projection.

OBLIQUE PROJECTION

Oblique projection may be illustrated in different ways, according to the choice of
axes, length of inclined side and direction of looking the side. As compared with
isometric projection, in oblique projection, one side of the object is horizontal,
second side is vertical and the third side is inclined at 30Oor 45O to the horizontal.
The lengths of the horizontal and vertical sides are equal to the actual lengths, but
the length of the inclined side is taken as three-fourth or half of the actual length.

PERSPECTIVE PROJECTION

Perspective projection or perspective drawing is the representation of an object
on a plane surface, called the picture plane, as it would appear to the eye, when
viewed from a fixed position. It may also be defined as the figure formed on the
picture plane when visual rays from the eye to the object cut the picture plane.
Perspective is mainly used in architecture. By means of perspective, the
architecture is able to show how an object would appear when constructed.

CONCLUSION

With my skills and what I have studied about engineering so far, I have finished all
the drawings given neat and clean. I also did research on the internet to look for
more information about engineering drawing, I also seek help from my friends to
assist me in my drawings so that there will no be any unforced error.
