Jim McCall produced a quality framework model for the US Air Force to bridge the gap between users and developers. The framework defines quality factors divided into software quality, product operation, product revision, and product transition categories. McCall's triangle of quality relates these factors to quality metrics. Product operation factors are defined by metrics expressions to quantify attributes. The approach is user-oriented at the highest level and software-oriented at lower levels, allowing periodic quantification during development.

- 6. Product Operation Factors McCall’s approach is to define a set of metrics and develop expressions for each quality factor according to which : Fq = c1 m1 + c2 m2 + ... + cn mn where, Fq is a quality factor, cn are regression coefficients and mn are the metrics that affect that quality factor.
- 7. Major aspects of approach User-oriented at highest level. Software-oriented at lower levels. Provides quantification of the attributes. Can be applied periodically during software development. Additional metrics, criteria or even factors can be added as the technologies of producing software change and as research efforts identify better measures.
