DISCLAIMER
• We will be working on this project on our free time (more than 200h commitment)
and there is no sponsoring from Qlik or our own company. I'm a Qlik Luminary and
we are Qlik experts, passionate about technology and want
to share our knowledge to rest of the world.
• We are not indenting to make money out of this but this is just covering the cost of
the Hardware necessary to work on this
• This is not replacing any consulting engagement you may have with your preferred
vendor or Qlik
• These guidelines you will get in exchange should not replace any Kubernetes
Admin/Expert requirement to succeed
• You will not get guidelines about what is Qlik Sense but details about QSEoK
• Audience : People knowing and already running Qlik Sense.

QlikSense Enterprise on the world’s
smallest most powerful Kubernetes
Cluster powered by Intel Next Unit of
Computing "

WHY THIS INITIATIVE ?
• Many companies started their Qlik Journey years ago with deployment
on Premise or Cloud with Windows and Virtualization. Some of us see real
potential on moving to Kubernetes and Containerization architecture to start new
deployment or migrate existing platform onto it.
• What does it mean exactly moving to Kubernetes when your support organization is
Windows Ready only and what are the benefits in terms of stability and scalability ?
What is the value and efficiency of Kubernetes Container vs Windows Virtual Servers
?
• This project will also show the behavior, performance and scalability of Qlik Sense
Enterprise on Kubernetes with Hardware like Pentium and Core i7 CPU vs High class
Xeon Gold and Platinum recommended for onPrem are AWS EC2 R5 instances.
THE BIRTH OF QUARKC-0
To really minimize the overall cost we looked at how
we could setup Qlik Sense on Kubernetes by building
a cluster with following focus : Small Form
factor, Powerful enough, Minimum of 8GB Memory
per node, Low Power consumption.
We came with the idea of making QUARKC-0 (on
the picture). This cluster has 4 nodes of Pentium N4200
Low Power Consumption of 6W, a Total of 32GB of
RAM and a size of 3.3x3.5 inches per board.
QUARKC HARDWARE COMPARISON
TARGET FOR QUARKC-1
QUARKC-1
24 Cores HT – 256GB RAM
4x Intel Core i7-10710U
4.6 inch
5.9inch
4.4inch
4.6 inchThe plan is to fund, build and
compare with QUARKC-1 which will
be 4 nodes of Core i7-
10710U (Latest Generation) with
64GB per node and Power
consumption of 15W.
QUARKC-1 will be 4x compute
performance of QUARKC-0 with a
total of 256GB of RAM (size of
board 4x4 inches).
According to CPU benchmarks, 4x
i7-10710U (6 Cores each) should be
50% better than Xeon Platinum
8175 (24 Cores) used on AWS EC2
R5.
DELIVERABLES
1. A comprehensive guide on How to deploy Qlik Sense on Kubernetes but also
how to setup the cluster and details about scaling horizontally with adding new
K8s nodes. Containerization is offering better efficiency and isolation from the
host. So this can offer multiple QS sites on same HW/deployment. This will also
contain benchmark and Performance details comparing QUARKC-0 and QUARKC-
1.
2. A comparison of Qlik Sense on Kubernetes deployments on Premise vs Cloud
options. This will also contain benchmark and Performance details comparing
QUARKC with Cloud deployment.
3. A comparison of Qlik Sense on Kubernetes vs Windows. A comprehensive guide
highlighting all similarities, differences, advantages and challenges of Qlik Sense
on Kubernetes vs Windows. This will also contain benchmark and Performance
details comparing QUARKC with Windows deployment.
