demanding the fulfillment of his own death sentence for two murders he committed in
Utah. He became the first person executed in the United States in ten years. At the time,
Utah had two methods of execution — firing squad or hanging. Believing a hanging could
be botched, Gilmore chose the former, declaring, "I'd prefer to be shot." Gilmore was
executed on January 17, 1977, at 8:07 a.m. by firing squad. When asked for any last
