Question 1
In what ways does your media product
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
• We have created a film opening following the genre
romantic-comedy, with a target audience of teenagers.
Throughout the opening we used simplistic features, such
as titles. This created an effective opening thus following
the rom-com genre.
• We researched and analysed other film openings that
followed our genre, and noted down information such as
what titles show first, how long they stay on the screen for
and how they are used. When editing our opening and
putting the titles in the research from ‘The art of the title’
website helped us create a well balanced filming to title
balance.
Dictionary title
The first scene the audience see is a the definition of
‘serendipity’. We used this for a number of reasons, the
definition has the name of the movie ‘An accidental
discovery’ within it, hinting to the audience and linking them
together towards the end of the opening. Also we got the
idea of the typing animation effect from the beginning of
the film ‘500 days of summer’, the opening incorporates
generic conventions with help from the titles.
Turnerfield Productions
• Turnerfield productions is the first title
to be seen, it is in a different font to
the other titles in order to make it
stand out, and to create a well known
name. It is also shown twice, this is to
reinforce the productions name, and is
done by many different production
companies.
Starring
• We decided to put the main
characters starring titles in the
opening of the film, this is one
of the main titles as it is where
the split screen
disappears, giving the audience
chance to focus on each main
character. Also the shot of the
female character shows the
male character in the
background. Hinting to the
audience there will be possible
interaction
Split screen
• The use of the split screen adds mystery to
the opening, the audience see the two
characters but never see them interact, also
the use of dark titles and no dialouge make
the audience start to build their own story
up, until the end of the opening were the
split screen becomes one screen and the two
characters are sat next to each other. This
challenges the conventions of this genre,
adding a twist to the end.
