Q1 In what ways does your media
products use, develop, or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?

Throughout this process we chose
‘Adulthood’ as a real media text to focus
on and emulate. We picked this film due to
us choosing the social realism genre to
base our teaser on. ‘Adulthood’ is a
popular and well known example of this
genre. As a group we came across
different conventions we developing our
poster, magazine and teaser.

We based our poster on the official poster of
‘Adulthood:

Tagline
Title of film in bold font
Ratings and comments from
critics, creates a positive buzz
around the film
Main cast in the center of
the poster with titles above
their heads
Dark urban setting
Main character in the
front with the
supporting characters
in back
Release date & names of
producers, directors etc.
Magazine cover
As a group we decided to base our magazine cover on Empire magazine. We found an
issue of Empire that featured ‘trainspotting’ on the front which was a good real media text
use since trainspotting is a social realism film

Trailer
We studied the conventions of the official ‘Adulthood’ trailer and tried to
emulate them in our teaser as much as we could.
We noticed key things especially in the way things were ordered:
1. Distribution label comes first
2. Titles are introduced
3. Quick cuts and shots showing off the blurs, fades and transitions
4. Diegetic and non-diegetic sounds play as a series of shots are introduced
teasing the plot
5. Trailer ends with title of film in a black background and quick shots of the
names are shown also ‘coming soon’.
One main thing we noticed and worked on were the titles. The titles were kept
consistent throughout the trailer – same font, same size, same colour:
