Question 1 of A2 Evaluation
INTERVIEWS

Here is a an screenshot of an interview we did where we used the typical codes
and conventions of an interview having the interviewee looking across the camera
to the person asking the questions where the questions person is on the same
level as the interviewee her eyes are two thirds of the way up and one third across.
The interviewee was being questioned about hair as she was a hairdresser that is
why we thought about the mise en scene carefully and decided that having hair
products that are used would be a good set up. We also added graphics of a name
strip with a photograph of a hair brush which then said the name and occupation of
the interviewee which is positioned at the bottom of the screen. The atmospheric
noises of the hair salon can also be heard in the background noise because the
salon was in work mode, this challenged forms and conventions of a documentary
because normally in an interview you can not hear can anything around other than
the interviewee talking. Here the interviewer's face is lit up from the front not the
back this supports forms and conventions. We got the interviewees to answer the
questions back to us so that we could use the forms and conventions of this, we
thought it gave the documentary more flow.
VOX POPS

                                                   One of our vox
                                                   pops we filmed

Here is a shot of a vox pop we did with a person in public, we stopped people and
asked them questions on film. We wanted to ask members of the public so we could
different types of people such as backgrounds, gender, age ect. This helped us a lot
because we knew what sorts of things people liked. We shot the vox pops outside
the “Tony & Guy” salon because of the related questions we were asking them
about hair. The equipment we decided to use was a Sony HXR MC2000E video
camera which we then used a tripod to support. We used the tripod so it was easier
to adjust height according to the person we was interviewing. We used a clip mic
that was clipped on the person so that we were able to hear them clearly and so we
wouldn't hear anything loud in the background that could distract the audience
watching. The questions were asked by someone but then we got the people to
answer the questions back to us, we did this because we wanted to use the forms
and conventions of this because we think doing this created more flow to the vox
pops than if the audience heard us asking the interviewee the question.
SOUND

In our documentary we used the song “Five colours in her hair” By Mcfly. We did
this because it relates to the documentary and it is an upbeat song so it creates
an upbeat atmosphere. We went with the conventions of a voice over that would
narrate the documentary so that the audience watching would listen to the
narrator because of his authoritative tone. Having voiceover guides the audience
to what we are trying to show them. We used a male voiceover we think its more
soothing for the audience. Through out creating the documentary we used clip
mics that were clipped onto our interviewee, we also tried to use the boom on the
camera but the sound quality wasn't very good and it was difficult to hear what
the people were saying so we are happy with the fact we used the clip mic for the
rest of the interviews and vox pops. For the footage we used the boom for was
had to be changed using the audio effects, using sound balance we was able to
turn up the volume so that it was louder and the audience would be able to hear
clearer.
GRAPHICS

We added graphics onto the interviews that we made ourselves, we created the
name strip on Adobe Photoshop. As well as creating the strip we added a
photograph of a hair brush which is related to the documentary topic. The name
strip and interviewee’s name rolls onto the screen when the interview first starts and
then after 4-5 second of it being on the screen it rolls back off. Leaving the graphics
on the screen to that amount of time lets the audience get the chance to read it but
not enough for it to annoy them. We chose the colour pink as the colours scheme
for the graphics because we think that even though hair reaches out to a lot of
people it is still a feminine feature and the pink would reach out to female viewers.

                                             Here is a interview
                                             strip
ARCHIVE FOOTAGE

We used archive footage to create a montage, we used celebrity haircuts that may
influence a lot of people or have and we used a voiceover of part of the montage to
introduce it to the audience. It helps explain what our documentary is about, some of
the haircuts shown could be classed a an “Celebrity shocking haircut” or a “Hair
disaster” this relates to not only our documentary title but the subject too. The
montage also backs up certain parts of the documentary when we asked some
interviewees questions like “What do you think is the most popular haircut at the
moment?” and “Have you ever had a haircut influenced by a celebrity?”. Doing this
challenges the forms and conventions of a normal documentary because it is not
normally seen in a documentary that often. As part of the montage we have a
voiceover introducting a video clip which then takes over the documentary by playing
and showing this video for a few seconds this is to back up what the narrator is
saying. The video is "Just dance" by Lady Gaga, this celebrity is used because a lot
of her hair cuts and styles have influenced a lot of peoples hairstyles around the
world.
