Question 4Technology Used.
How did you use media technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages?Youtube was a main factor with regard to the planning and research criteria. Not only could we watch other short films, but we could also view tutorials of how to use programs. For example, we used a program called ‘Adobe Premier Pro’ to edit our film. However, we could not work out how to adjust the saturation of the shot. We searched on Youtube and there was a video tutorial of how to do this. We could also understand the conventions of other short films that we saw on Youtube.
LiveTypeLivetype Pro was used in order to create the credits for the opening of our film. Livetype was the perfect program for creating ‘Spiral Productions’ as it is was easy to use, and gave us the opportunity to you can add certain textures and effects, which was perfect for the effects we wished to create. We could watch tutorials and search on the internet for effects, hints and tips that were vital in the production of the ‘Spiral Productions’ intro.
Camera During the planning stages of Exodus, we decided to use a HD Camera. HD cameras are of much higher quality compared to normal video cameras. The HD Camera delivered crisper shots, cleaner images, and it also meant the sound quality was sharper. The camera we used was a Panasonic HDC SD10We also used a tripod. The benefits of this meant we could shoot on uneven ground. This was an advantage when shooting the shot reverse shot sequence, as it enabled us to have two legs on the pavement, and one leg on the road, thus eliminating a 6 inch gap between the pavement and the road. I had never used a HD camera before, so this increased my knowledge on how to shoot and perfect HD camera work. The HD Camera we used had an added feature called Smart Face Recognition. This meant that if we used a long shot, the persons face would be in perfect focus.
Camera. The Panasonic HDC SD10 had a two hour battery life. This enabled us to shoot outside for a long period of time without worrying about having to find a powerpoint. The HDC SD10 also had clever features such as automatic scene selection, face tracking, intelligent contrast, or the clever Auto Focus and Auto Exposure (AF/AE) system. This drastically improved the overall quality, picture and crispness of our footage compared to that of a normal video recorder. The focus also prioritized the faces, and skin tones were smoothed. The SD10 automatically sensed the ambient lighting and adjusted the exposure accordingly, so faces were bright and easy to see.
Planning. In order to see what our film was like, we created an Animatic. We made a storyboard which showed each of our shots that would be in the film. We then took photos of these shots using a digital camera. If we used a normal camera which had to be developed, we not have been able to put them onto a computer and edit them so we could make a mini movie of our film. We used an editing Program called Final Cut express to arrange the photos in order of appearance in the actual film, and put a voice over on top to simulate exactly how our film would look like.
Editing, Adobe Premier Pro. In order to edit Exodus we used Adobe Premier Pro. Once all the footage had been filmed and edited we could then place the soundtrack over the top. Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 software improves every part of the video production process thanks to the revolutionary 64-bit, GPU-accelerated Adobe Mercury Playback Engine, a highly efficient script-to-screen workflow, and native support for the latest tapeless camera formats that lets you begin editing without delay. Adobe Premier Pro also comes with over 200 transitions, filters, and effects, enabling us to create certain effects, for example light, sound, and overall quality of the picture. By watching full length feature films, one of the main features which made them look so professional was their wide screen format. The HD Camera and Adobe Premier Pro enabled us to edit Exodus in wide screencreating a cinematic experience.

Commentary. Once Exodus had been completed, we had to provide a commentary. This was done using a program on a Mac Computer called IMovie.
