Color and light
We only see a small section of
the light in the world
Quiz for color theory
The object absorbs all the colors
except the one you see
Quiz for color theory
The less light that is available the
less clearly we see
In bright light we see
color and detail
• In low light we see
shape and grey
Quiz for color theory
Cones and rods
Cones see color best.
Rods see shape and in low light
Additive and Subtractive
Color
Light Pigment
Additive color
Primary colors of Subtractive
colors are:
RedRed
YellowYellow
BlueBlue
It is called SUBTRACTIVE color because the
object absorbs all the colors except the one
you see.
To see White, you SUBTRACT all color.
Artificial light vs. Natural
light
Light affects color
Incandescent
Fluorescent
Natural
daylight
Daylight Tungsten light
This is because the two samples are different
batches of the same color dyed with completely
different chemicals or that the material is made
of different chemicals.
This is phenomenon is called metameric colors
Paint vs. Dye
Pigments are solids that get mixed with a binder. The
Binder dries and the paint stays put.
Dyes dissolve in their binder and bind with the
Fibers IN the fabric. Dye is transparent.
Basic terms
Quiz for color theory
HUE= COLOR NAME
Value
VALUE = HOW MUCH
BLACK AND WHITE IS IN A
COLOR
Tints
SATURATION=
How Bright or dull a color is
SATURATION
The more grey or complement
it possesses the more neutral it appears
The closer to even two opposites get,
more neutral it appears
The lower the saturation the
closer to neutral the color is
Beige
Wheat
Grey
Neutrals project using chromatic
neutrals (chromatic because we used
color, not just Black and White or
50% complement)
Cool greys
cool black (mars black)
mixed with white
Warm Greys
Warm black (ivory black)
mixed with white)
Neutral
made with
only B& W
(achromatic)
Neutral made
with 50/50
Opposites
Chromatic neutrals
Markers and color pencils
refer to warm and cool grey
Color schemes
SPLIT-COMPLEMENTARY
• A color
combination
whereby a hue is
used with the
hues lying to
either side of its
direct
complementary.
Monochromatic
• Referring to a
color combination
based on
variations in
value and
saturation of a
single hue,
sometimes with
the addition of
some neutral
colors.
ANALOGOUS
• Those lying next
to each other on
the color wheel
• (usually 3).
TRIAD• Three colors
equal distant
from each other
on the color
wheel.
COMPLEMENTARY•
Colors that lie
opposite each
other on a color
wheel. When
placed side by side
they will intensify
each other
visually; when
mixed as pigments
they will dull each
other.
Color extensions
How powerful one color is compared to
another. We are not talking about
mixing.

How color affect color
Fugitive Sensations
FUGITIVE SENSATIONS
Simultaneous contrast: color moves
away from the surrounding color
Color assimilation: the spreading affect of
colors when similar sizes
Successive contrast: The after-image
Successive Contrast
Aka Retinal Fatigue
Quiz for color theory
Quiz for color theory
Simultaneous Contrast
Colors shift their hues into the
direction of the complementary
color if the color is small
Colors look brighter if they are
equal
Colors look lighter or darker with
respect to the background
Simultaneous Contrast
Just like drinking
orange juice after a
bite of maple syrup
pancakes, It makes
the juice SEEM more
sour.
Simultaneous Contrast
Two colors, side by
side, interact with
one another and
change our
perception
accordingly.
This is strongest
when the colors are
complements
Hue induction thru simultaneous contrast
The target color seems to be tinged with the
complementary color of the surround (most
noticeable with a gray target).
Simultaneous contrast using value
Though the colors of the middle squares
seem to look the same, they are different,
Simultaneous Contrast
Bezold
A person and an effect
Color Assimilation
When colors spread into each other
instead of producing a contrast effect
Red changing in respect to it’s
surroundings
Wilhelm von Bezold's (4) color illusion remains a
neurological puzzle today. Both pictures contain the
same colors but their different positions relative to one
another lead to extreme changes in color. The same
red is perceived as red-violet in one picture and as
orange-red in the other. Blue and yellow change their
hues less because - in this case - only two neighboring
elements are different.
