Informative about Radiosity in 3D and CAD
Radiosity is an application of the finite element method
to solving the rendering equation for scenes(CAD and
3D) with surfaces that reflect light diffusely.
Radiosity is a global illumination algorithm in the sense
that the illumination arriving at the eye comes not just
from the light sources, but all the scene surfaces
interacting with each other as well. Also radiosity is a
method of rendering based on detailed analysis of light
reflections off diffuse 3D surfaces. It calculates diffuse
reflections of color and light from all surfaces in a scene.
Calculatiing it divides each surface into small pieces,
called patches. Each patch is calculated individually for
the amount of light that enters or leaves that surface. The
program then solves the system of equations in the model
by determining the quantity of light on each patch as a
result of the total sum of all the patches.
Radiosity calculations are viewpoint independent which
increases the computations involved, but makes them
useful for all viewpoints.

The images that result from a radiosity renderer are
characterized by soft gradual shadows. Typically is used
to render images of the of inside space interior. Therefore
can achieve extremely photo-realistic results for scenes
that are comprised of diffuse reflecting surfaces. In a way,
radiosity makes 3D lights behave like real world rays –
with all the pros and cons that comes with them.
Here some advantages of radiosity that are used in GI
while is rendering:
-Spread color “energy” throughout the scene until a stasis
point is reached;
-Only handles diffuse reflection, no specular reflections;
-Large memory consumption;
-Very realistic soft illumination images can be produced.
Radiosity as a rendering technique can give some
remarkable results. That is enabled of the
phenomenon of specular reflection. So it aloud to
display the highlight at different points even when
objects are viewed from different angles.
This is because shiny surfaces reflect light
unequally in different directions, on a perfectly shiny
surface light is reflected only in the direction of the
reflected ray. So radiosity enabled the light to
arrived directly and indirectly from the environment
at each surface point and uses this as the point of
illumination.The elegance of this approach is that it
produces all of the effects of the real object's
appearance illuminated by the light of the
environment, including self-shadowing, and it can be
applied to any material, from metal to plastic or
glass.

But, there is adisadvantage of radiosity. This
disadvantage of radiosity it applies to matte and
diffuse surfaces only, so contributions from
translucent, transparent, and specular (shiny)
surfaces are not included in the calculation.
Therefore almost always is used in combination with
ray tracing.
