This document summarizes a research project exploring how professional development and personal learning for information professionals can be meaningful outside of traditional career progression models. The researchers conducted a literature review and meetings to explore this question. Their preliminary findings identified some key themes: the need for a critical reflective space to discuss professional development; looking beyond traditional models to other contexts; tensions around professional identity; and the importance of communities of practice. The researchers suggest these findings imply the field should look to other models for inspiration, make space for reflection, recognize the personal value of professional development, and further examine issues of professional identity.
