Raising a generation
Challenges & Solutions
Miss a beat and you lose a
generation

Think of your Role Model
1. For how many of you is it a parent or a teacher?
2. What about your Role Model, inspires you?
3. What would your children / students say if I were to ask
them the same question?
3
The challenge is to inspire those who we
have the maximum facetime with

Only 3 – essentials
1. Values
2. Literacy
3. Numeracy
Everything else they can learn on their own
When we have a single point of
reference for success i.e.
making money, we create a
culture of banditry.
Our population demographic
1. 526 million under the age of 25
2. 272 million between the ages of 10-19
3. Youngest population in the world for the next 30 – 40
years
4. Can become the ‘workforce’ for the world, if…
Potential for success or disaster
Raising a generation - Challenges and Solutions
4 – major threats
1. Work will get more technical & machine based
2. Robotics, AI, Neural networks, algorithms
3. Production efficiency = Fewer jobs for humans
4. Knowledge is available, free of cost
Teaching as we know it, will be one of the first
jobs to disappear
What does it mean?
1. Education as we know it will become redundant
2. Machine learning will automate most jobs
3. “With economic development, a higher proportion of knowledge
becomes embodied in machines. This means that the economy-
wide productivity increases despite individual workers having
less understanding of what they do than their counterparts in
the past.
4. E.g. Most shop assistants in the West, can’t add or multiply
Do we need teachers at all?
1. Any teacher who can be replaced by a machine, will be
2. All technology and fact courses will be automated
3. Google and other search engines will make information
easily accessible to anyone
4. Open source education, Salman Khan Academy and
others will teach anything that anyone wants to learn
Yes, because no machine can teach responsibility,
compassion, courage and autonomy
No machine can teach values
When was the last
time you saw
outrage, angst or
even concern about
poverty, tobacco,
drugs or economic
disparity in our
national media?
Of course, you
know why!!
Are we prepared for this?
What do we need and what
do we have?
Education must produce
1. Strong Values (Principles) and Ethics (Code of Conduct)
2. Curiosity (ask questions) and Imagination (find answers)
3. Autonomy, Ownership, Responsibility, Accountability
4. Service Focus, Social Conscience, Compassion, Kindness
5. A fundamental belief in Justice & Human dignity
We must teach them to win in a world that we
know nothing about
What’s this place?
1. Gate shuts when you enter
2. Can’t do anything by yourself
3. Your opinion doesn’t matter
4. You are never consulted
about anything important
5. Bells ring : You obey
6. Yours not to question, ‘Why?’
7. You must ask permission
even to go to the toilet
8. You are punished, when
someone else fails
9. Cardinal virtue:
Unquestioning obedience
10. Cardinal sin: Dissent
Total absence of autonomy and accountability
Our present system
1. Delays maturity instead of developing it
2. Promotes dependence on authority and rewards
obedience & conformity, above all else
3. Denies autonomy and promotes irresponsibility
4. Distorts reality about success and failure
5. Calls memorizing and regurgitation; Passing Exams
Ask, ‘What must a student do to ace a test?’
A system
designed
to create
obedient
slaves
If a system is to be judged by its
results, what should we say about
our education system looking at its
result – our society?
The Tragedy
Is that our system is highly successful
If you want to be successful you
must respect one rule:
Never lie to yourself.
~ Paulo Coelho
Raising a generation - Challenges and Solutions
What won’t work
1. Our experience
2. Our solutions
Get used to the shock
Raising a generation - Challenges and Solutions
First priority
Demonstrate Values
Because people listen with their eyes
Why Values?
1. Values
1. Inspire and motivate
2. Sustain us through hardship
3. Provide a sense of purpose
4. Create resilience to rise from failure
5. Enhance self esteem and morality
“Values drive behavior; Behavior drives results”
Integrity
Integrity is one of several paths -
But it’s the only one on which you will never be lost
First Lesson
Teach kindness
Children listen with their eyes
Education is not the
accumulation of random bits of
information, no matter how
complex.
What is a right answer?
1. How many of you reward children for answering
questions in a way that you never thought of yourself?
2. How many of you punish children for thinking
differently from the approved way?
3. How many of you encourage children to ask questions
other than for clarity?
Do you give prizes for ‘Best Question’?
Change the approach
1. Teaching how to those who understand why
2. Add value to what they can learn on their own
3. Challenge them to solve problems
4. Empower innovation and creativity
5. Teach them the tools to succeed
Connect dots – not collect dots
Ask the child
1. What would happen if YOU were no longer her teacher?
2. What would be lost to the child if YOU were not teaching
that subject?
3. What is your personal key contribution to the child’s
education?
What difference do You make?
Ask the
child
I will not allow what is not
in my control to prevent
me from doing what is, in
my control.
