The next generation of blockbuster IP enabled services will most likely be enabled by a combination of network operator assets plus chatbots, 3rd party applications or mash-ups with existing internet services. Functional RCS complexities are enabled by web-based APIs using successful development paradigms widely used by internet firms and large enterprises. Xura’s RCS API Gateway The RCS API Gateway enables a network operator to easily develop, or enable, new monetizable RCS services. Integration with the core network is based on the RCS User to Network Interface or UNI, avoiding the overhead, delays and costs of traditional approaches: –– Services are subject to the same controls as RCS subscribers: security, policy, interception –– RCS UNI is a very well understood and tested interface, independent from the core –– Existing IMS and RCS servers are used, with no ad-hoc configuration –– No requirements over provisioning or other OSS/BSS systems –– A subscriber just needs an RCS enabled terminal to access applications and services, no extra software or specific configuration is needed

The streamlined UNI allows the relationship a network operator has with developers to become more “internet-like” than the traditional model that required long periods of development and testing. The bulk of network integration is enabled by the RCS API Gateway which means using RCS UNI eliminates the need for complete testing cycles for each application. As a result, service providers remain fully in control and existing procedures and systems can be effectively managed and re-used. This lightweight network integration enables services to be deployed easily for API stores, bot stores or even for pilots and trials. With minimal overhead, services are enriched with genuinely useful functionality allowing the network operator to explore business models and developer engagements before a full launch.
