Reading and Writing Learning Center: MeasurementBy: Katie Meth
Indicator and ObjectiveStandard indicator: Math 2.5.1- Measure and estimate the length to the nearest inch, foot, yard, centimeter, and meter.Goal/Objective:After interacting with the center students have a better understanding of measuring and estimating the length of objects in inches, feet, yards, centimeters, and meters.
VocabularyLinear Units- are used to measure the length, width, height, and distance.  Understanding the sizes of different standard linear units will help you choose the appropriate units of measure to use.Inch (in)- is about the length of your thumb from the first knuckle to the tip.  Smaller objects, such as pencils or nails, are measured in inches.Foot (ft)- is about the length of a sheet of paper.  A person’s height or the length of a room is measured in feet.Yard (yd)- is about the length of a baseball bat.  The length of a football field is measured in yards.Centimeter (cm)- is about the width of your index finger.Meter (m)- is about the width of a door.

ActivitySelect one book Read the book silently Write in your science and math journal about the book you read.  Be sure to include the following information.What is the title of the book?Who wrote and illustrated the book?Write a short summary of the book.Draw a picture about your favorite part of the book. Color your drawing.Measure four (4) pictures in the book and record the page number, which picture you measured, and how big the picture is.Example:  I measured the cat on page number 1 and it was 3 inches long.
For the TeacherCheck your student’s science and math journal after they have completed the reading and writing station.They should have written the following about each book they read:TitleAuthor and IllustratorA short summaryA drawing from their favorite part of the story.It must be colored4 examples of pictures from the book that they measured.
