Reading Strategies
For before, during and after
reading.
Melissa O’Malley
“Once you learn to read, you will be forever
free”. –Frederick Douglass
Before Reading Strategies:
What is the purpose of reading this ?
Prior knowledge of subject matter
What do I already know about this subject?
Is the content of this text familiar?
Do I recognize and know the meaning of
vocabulary in this text?
Make predictions about what you will read:
“Reading is to the mind
what exercise is to the
body”. – Richard Steele
During Reading Strategies:
Visualize what you are reading about. Try to picture
the people, places and events you are reading about.
Make connections with the text
Ask questions as you read
Who?
What?
Where?
When?
Stop to monitor comprehension.
Stop throughout your reading to
stop and monitor your
comprehension. Summarize what
you have learned so far.
Use Fix Up Strategies
“To learn to read is to light a fire; every
syllable that is spelled out is a spark”.
-Victor Hugo, Les Miserables
After Reading Strategies
Create questions about your reading
Come up with questions based
on what you read and learned
about. This is where you can
show what you know!
Compare and contrast texts
Think of how the text
compared to other texts
that you have read. What
was different and what
as the same?
Evaluate what you read
Take time after your reading to evaluate the text.
Did you enjoy reading it? Did you find it boring or
was it interesting? Was it too challenging or too
easy? Would you recommend this text? Why or why
not?
Reflect on your reading
Take time to think about
your reading. What went
wrong and what went
right? Was the text to easy
or too challenging? What
would make for a better
reading experience next time?
“Any book that helps a child to form a habit of
reading, to make reading one of his deep and
continuing needs, is good for him”.
-Maya Angelou
