1. READING TASKS FIND LOGOS: Use a highlighter to mark the text to show where Rowling appeals to logic and/or evidence (Logos). FIND PATHOS: Use a highlighter to mark the text to show where Rowling appeals to the audience’s emotions (Pathos). FIND ETHOS: Use a highlighter to mark the text to show where Rowling establishes her credibility and authority (Ethos). IDENTIFY IMAGERY: Highlight examples of imagery that you find in the speech, and consider what sort of feelings or ideas the images evoke for the audience. IDENTIFY TONE: Read over the speech, marking sections with words to describe Rowling’s tone. Look for where the tone shifts and highlight specific words or phrases that help indicate her tone. APPEAL TO AUDIENCE: Consider this audience--their backgrounds, their interests and agenda. Find specific passages that show Rowling’s ability to reach out to and address this audience.
