Rectifier is a device that converts alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). There are two main types: a half wave rectifier converts only one half of the AC cycle to DC while a full wave rectifier converts the entire AC cycle to DC. The key components of a rectifier are a step down transformer to reduce the AC voltage, and semiconductor diodes which allow current to pass during one half of the AC cycle but block it during the other half cycle, resulting in conversion to DC.
