A	cup	of	coffee	is	a	designed
ar&fact	that	will	serve	as	an
example	of	recursive	design.
Regardless	of	individual	brewing	method,	a	cup	of	coffee	emerges	from	the	interac&on
of	the	same	set	of	subsystems.

System for brewing coffee
A step forward in usability…
…a step backward in taste
A	simplified	machine	can
combine	subsystems	to
reduce	the	overall
complexity	of	the	brewing
system.	However,	this
usability	comes	at	the	price
of	control	and
manipula&on	of	the
subsystems,	and	prevents
the	brewer	from	op&mizing
those	subsystems
according	to	her	own
techniques.

Returning	to	the	original	system,	we	can
reveal	that	each	subsystem	is	itself
composed	of	addi&onal	subsystems
COFFEE
BEANS
GRINDER
For	example,	the	coffee	used	in
brewing	is	the	result	of	interac&on
between	the	bean	and	the	grinder.	Two
unique	subsystems.

PRE-PROCESS
Moving	further	down	the	stack,	we
can	see	that	the	beans	themselves
emerge	from	interac&ons	of
mul&ple	subsystems.
Pre-process The civet eats the cherries for the fleshy pulp,
then in the digestive tract, fermentation occurs.
The civet's protease enzymes seep into the
beans, making shorter peptides and more free
amino acids.
The	most	expensive	beans	in	the
world	emerge	from	a	specialized
subsystem
Recipe for Perfect Coffee
1.  Grow	your	favorite	variety	of	bean	in	ideal	condi&ons
2.  Raise	a	colony	of	civets
3.  Master	the	roas&ng	process
4.  Find	the	ideal	grind
5.  Master	your	brewing	system
6.  Enjoy!
Crea&ng	a	perfect	cup	of	coffee	requires	mastery	over	each	subsystem,	so	that
it	can	be	op&mized	for	the	best	result	at	the	top	of	the	stack
Recipe for Perfect Coffee (by discipline)
1.  Grow	your	favorite	variety	of	bean	in	ideal	condi&ons
(agriculture,	farming)
2.  Raise	a	colony	of	civets	(Zoology)
3.  Master	the	roas&ng	process	(Chemistry)
4.  Find	the	ideal	grind	(mechanics)
5.  Master	your	brewing	system	(Barista)
6.  Enjoy!	(Coffee	Tas&ng)
This	is	a	truly	interdisciplinary	effort	to	get	a	final	emergent	result.	This	is	quite	a	lot
for	one	individual	to	manage,	although	not	impossible	if	simplifica&ons	can	be	made
at	each	subsystem	level.

Cogni&ve	Point-of-View
Goguen	and	Varela	referred	to	this	as
changing	a	“cogni&ve	point-of-view	on	a
system.	As	one	changes	their	CPOV	they
remain	embedded	in	the	system,	but	are
“informa&onally	coupled”	to	different
subsystems.

This	is	the	essence	of	Recursive	Design
Implica&ons	and	Ques&ons
Moving	CPOV	up	and	down	the	system	tree	is	a
Recursive	Process.

How	do	we	represent	design	problems	and	processes	in
system	trees	and	how	do	we	make	them	manageable?

How	do	we	teach	designers	to	work	up	and	down	the
tree?	What	do	they	need	to	know?
