This document discusses recursive design through the example of brewing coffee. It explains that a cup of coffee emerges from the interaction of subsystems like coffee beans, grinder, filter, vessel, and water. Each of these subsystems can also be broken down further into their own subsystems. The document advocates taking a "cognitive point of view" by focusing on different subsystems at different levels to better understand the overall system through a recursive process of moving between levels. It provides the example of sustainably designing the Mirra office chair through this hierarchical and recursive approach.
