Red Tacton is a new technology developed by NTT that uses the human body as a network transmission path at speeds of up to 10 Mbps. It functions by generating weak electric fields on the skin's surface that modulate optical properties of an electro-optic crystal in the transceiver to transmit data. The system is safe for the human as no current flows into the body, and only causes displacement current from electric fields interacting with skin electrons. Potential applications include secure authentication, device personalization through touch, and acting as an alternative to short-range wireless systems.
