Throughout the following reflection, we will explain how the text
“Sociolinguistic Patterns” affects the language itself, the importance of it, and how it
is related to the course Lexical Analysis. Moreover, this text is useful for students
and future English teachers because it has clear examples of how language
change depending on the context that is used, as well as the different features that
are involved in language.
First of all, we need to know that sociolinguistics is the study of the language in a
social context. Sociolinguistic, in general terms, explains how language is affected
by different patterns such as social class, gender, age, among others. These
patterns differ depending on the context a language is being used.
Sociolinguistics Patterns text contributes to the Lexical Analysis course
because it helps us to understand how a language can change due to this features
that are presented in every country, every society. Besides, it helps us to develop
critical thinking which contributes in our learning of the English Language. On one
hand, this text is an aid for teachers because it is a kind of guidance for learning
and teaching varieties of English which has a direct relationship with the unit we
are going over this semester at university. On the other hand, the text is useful
material to comprehend and know a little bit more about the development of a
language that can vary depending on external and internal patterns.
As a conclusion, sociolinguistic patterns text comes to the aid of students,
specifically, future teachers. In our personal opinion, we think that this text has to
be shared among students of English, because it tells us how a language can
change by studying and analyzing the different patterns that are involved in this
change. Even though, a language (in this case English) has several variations
depending on context and the people who speak it. English can be understood by
every single person who speaks this language, because it has become a
worldwide language, due to the process of standardization.
