Relationship between semantics and
teaching vocabulary
 Vocabulary occurs naturally in native
speakers, while L2 learners have to
memorize it.
 The mind uses semantic similarities to
classify words, that’s why is important for
teaching vocabulary
 Semantic words together make learners to
compare words and it is more easy for
learners to know word meaning
 Unrelated words are effective to adult
beginners
 Related words are effective for children
Techniques for presenting vocabulary
 There are two techniques for presenting vocabulary: Semantically related
and semantically unrelated word sets. It could be a good idea, if teachers
use semantic unrelated words in their lesson plans,
• works in a short term
• works for young learners and had higher scores

• They are on text books
• They are easy for teachers to teach
• follows the communicative needs of EFL learners
