MUTHER’S GRID
 Used in situations for which quantitative
data are difficult to obtain or don't
address the layout problem
 Richard Muther developed a format for
displaying manager preference for
departmental locations , known as
MUTHER’S GRID
 The preference grid information in
coded into 6 categories associated
with 5 vowels (A, E , I , O , U) PLUS
THE LETTER X
RELATIONSHIP DIAGRAM:
Is a schematic diagram that uses
weighted lines to denote location
preference
 The thickest line identify closeness
ratings with highest priority
 Undesirable closeness ratings are
marked with zigzagged lines
 Thin lines representing (1 or 2 strands,
unimportant or okay) can be of any
length and hence may be eliminated.
 (a) : production and shipping and
receiving are located too far from
stockroom
 Offices and locker room are located too
close
Important that shipping and
receiving located next to
production
Absolutely necessary that
stockroom be located next
to production
Especially important that
locker room be located next to
production
It is okay if offices are
located next to production
Diamond shape grid
This info is
used to
construct
RELATIONSHIP
DIAGRAM
The vowels match the 1st letter of
the closeness rating for locating 2
departments next to each other
PREFERENCE GRID INFORMATION
Absolutely necessary that
toolroom be located next to
production
Takes a load summary
chart and block diagrams as input
and then makes pairwise exchanges
of departments until no
improvements in cost or non
adjacency can be foundCRAFT

Technique
COMPUTERIZED LAYOUT SOLUTIONS
To Prevent Cumbersomeness
Uses nonquantitative input and
relationship diagrams
Used for up to 45 departments
CORELAP
Computerized

layout
planning
Service layout
Most services use process layout due to variability in customers
request for service
May have different objectives than manufacturing layouts
Instead of minimizing flow of material through the system, services
may seek to minimize the flow of customers or the paperwork
