Hobbs, R. (2017). Create to Learn. NY: Wiley.

Hobbs, R. (2017). Create to Learn. NY: Wiley.
TRUE OR FALSE?
You can’t be a writer without being a reader,
and you can’t be a filmmaker without being a
film viewer.
As people create, they inevitably copy,
transform & remix the ideas and experiences
they have encountered
Summarizing, analyzing, direct quotation and
copying are a part of the creative production
process
Standing on the
Shoulders of Giants
Hobbs, R. (2017). Create to Learn. NY: Wiley.
There is no creating without being influenced by
other work.
Thank
Goodness for
Deadlines!
Under time pressure, many
people wind up creating
something they would have
never created if they had more
time
Hobbs, R. (2017). Create to Learn. NY: Wiley.
Remix Creativity
Remix (noun or verb): to combine or edit
existing materials to produce something new
Human creativity is combinatorial: we take old
ideas and mash them together to create new
ideas.
Remix creativity depends upon having a good
understanding of intellectual property,
copyright and fair use.
Hobbs, R. (2017). Create to Learn. NY: Wiley.
Transformative Use
• Copyright law is designed to promote new knowledge,
creativity, and innovation. It does that by balancing the
rights of the copyright holder with the rights of the user
• Transformative use occurs when an author, filmmaker,
or creative individual uses quotes, clips, or samples from
copyrighted material productively to create something
new
• To be lawful, the quoted matter must be used in a
different manner or for a different purpose than the
original
• Copyright law authorizes you to create new content that
includes bits of other people’s ideas as you repurpose or
transform those ideas
Hobbs, R. (2017). Create to Learn. NY: Wiley.
Critical Questions
for Making a Fair
Use Determination
 Did my use of the work re-purpose or transform the copyrighted
material? Did I add value?
 Did I merely re-transmit the original work? Could my work serve as
a substitute or replacement for the original?
 Did I use just the amount I needed in order to accomplish my
purpose?
Hobbs, R. (2017). Create to Learn. NY: Wiley.
Unleashing the Power of Structure
Beginnings
Break through the clutter by
capturing and holding attention
Endings
Reveal a hidden surprise, wrap things
together in a tidy way, validate our
feelings, or leave us wanting more
Concision
A sentence should contain no
unnecessary words, a paragraph no
unnecessary sentences
Internal Segmentation
Signaling devices is help to readers
see the shape and flow of ideas.
Hobbs, R. (2017). Create to Learn. NY: Wiley.
To Create is to be Seen
• When we use digital media to
create, our work becomes
generally more visible to
others
• To create is to be seen (by
yourself and others) and this
involves risks
• There is the distinct
possibility of being judged, or
criticized for the creative
work that you produce
