Unit One Starts with chapter two Pages 54-58a (Then backs up to page 21)
WARM UP Evaluate the following expressions when x = 2 and x = 3 (two answers for each). 3x – 1 4(x+3)
WARM UP answers 3x – 1 = 3(2) – 1=5 3(3)-1 = 8 4(x+3) 4(2+3) =20 4(3+3)=24
Rational Numbers Terminate Repeat
Let’s look at Terminating decimals The fraction Doing the math 0.8 comes to an end, or terminates
Try one. Does terminate? 0.625 does not continue past the five (5). It terminates.
Repeating Decimals Try dividing We read this as point 3 repeating.
Try One Is a repeating decimal? 5/12 is a repeating decimal
Which is it? Is a repeating or a terminating decimal? A: repeating decimal
Greater than or Less than? It’s time to know that > is greater than. < means less than. is equal to or less than. is equal to or less than.
Order these numbers -7 -14.8 -14.6 532,028 523,828
Order numbers answers 3 > -7 -14.8 < -14.6 532,028 > 523,828
Opposite numbers -3 is the opposite of +3 -15 is the opposite of +15 +7.5 is the opposite of -7.5 What do you get when you add two opposites numbers? -9 + 9 = 0
Absolute Value The answer to numbers inside absolute value signs is always positive. What does Absolute Value Not mean? Absolute value is NOT opposite.
Try some. | -5 + 7 | = | -6 + -15 | = 3 - |-4 + -5| = +2 +21 -6 ( order of operations is used) 3 – (+9)
