Rizal was a Filipino polymath during the 19th century. He was born to a wealthy family and received an excellent education in the Philippines, Spain, and France. He had expertise in many fields including medicine, art, teaching, and writing. As a writer, he published two novels and several essays that were influential in the Filipino independence movement but also made him an enemy of the Spanish colonial government. He was ultimately executed by the Spanish in 1896 at the age of 35, becoming a martyr for the cause of Filipino independence.
