This document outlines guiding principles for selecting and organizing content for teaching. It discusses ensuring content is valid, significant, balanced, sufficiently in-depth yet feasible to cover. It emphasizes going beyond facts to promote conceptual understanding through experimentation, exploring ideas in depth, and relating concepts to students' experiences. Subject matter content should integrate cognitive elements like facts and concepts, skills like thinking and manipulation, and affective elements like attitudes and values. Values can and should be taught through exposure, reinforcement of good behavior, and addressing the cognitive aspect of values in the classroom. Teachers play a critical role as models inside and outside the classroom.
