This document summarizes and discusses various aspects of representation in Beyoncé's "Formation" music video, including gender, race, age, and patriarchy. It finds that the video breaks from gender norms by portraying women as powerful and independent rather than objects for the male gaze. It also features an entirely Black cast of women and people of various ages, challenging norms. While a few shots could be seen through the lens of Laura Mulvey's "male gaze" theory, overall the video counters patriarchal objectification of women and portrays them as strong and self-confident.
