Representation study
- 1. By Ben S-B I had to find eight photos of artists who relate to my music magazine genre of chill-out music. I chose Robin Schulz, Duke Dumont, Route 94, Cyril Hahn, TCTS, Flume, Chris Lorenzo and Thomas Jack. All of these are male and quite young showing how youthful the audience will be as well. - 2. The use of this suitcase could be an indexical sign showing that Robin Schulz is going places in the world of music. That he is growing in fame and he is preparing for something big and new for himself. The use of him sitting on this unmade bed suggests that he has just woken up and is ready to recreate the ‘chill-out’ scene of music which he is doing fantastically well. It signifies that he is a busy person. Him wearing these sunglasses inside shows that he is always awake and ready to produce new music He is wearing a t-shirt with a Deadmau5 logo on it, use of mise en scene and props. Deadmau5 is a very famous electronic music producer similar to him. This suggests that he aims to one day become as famous as Deadmau5 and if not more famous, it shows his ambitions. A young man who recently became famous due to his remix of Waves by Mr. Probz. He is known for making chilled out deep music which people can relax to. He is possibly the most famous example of my genre of music for the magazine.
- 3. This photo of Duke shows him playing at a BBC festival, the caption is ‘in the zone’ suggesting that Duke is constantly in focus and performing well live giving his audience a fabulous time. He has a microphone in front of him, some on ear headphones on too to block the outside noise and he is playing a synth, this shows mode of address and use of mise en scene to show how heavily concentrated he is. The use of him wearing a leather jacket suggests that he has classic style. The camera shot is at a perfect angle to show him performing using all of his instruments and technologies, including backing people, it represents him trying his best to give people a good time as well as showing how complicated his life and job is. Duke DumontDuke is a tropical house artist, to most people it would be music you could listen to on a beach and chill-out to it. His most famous song is I Got U which was incredibly popular in the summer of 2014.
- 4. Route 94’s clothing here suggests he is a bright and cheery character. The use of a red shiny jacket contrasts with his slightly dark skin as well as his white plain t- shirt with the tunnel and lights he is surrounded by in the background, all this is use of mise en scene. The tunnel signifies that he has an endless possibility of music in which he can create. As he is more house type of music creator. He is very young and has a very bright future. The fact that he is looking upwards suggests he is pondering what he is planning next, his next song, his next event or next hair style. His hair is very wavy and blown out like a typical afro. Many girls would find him attractive as well due to his complexion and looks. All these factors attract a wider audience to him and increases his popularity. Route 94 Route 94 makes house music, a slightly different genre to most chill- out music. It’s more dance worthy and people tend to listen to it more at parties etc. His most famous song is My Love which was popular in 2014. He is a very famous example of my genre of music.
- 5. Cyril Hahn is probably the least famous of the artists so far. He produces similar music of which is very chilled and casual. The use of a plain white T-Shirt signifies his simplicity and casual nature in his music. The use of his smirk of his face suggests he is happy as he is with the music he is producing and that people are enjoying it too. The use of this casual, what appears to be a café or restaurant, also suggests his simple music style and nature, he has time to go out and be himself in normal restaurants etc. Overall he is very individual in the music he produces. The use of this café though shows that he is still a very normal person despite the small fame and fortune he receives, good use of the shot locations. Cyril Hahn Cyril Hahn produces incredible relaxing and chilled music, mainly they are remix of others songs made better by him. He is promoted mostly through YouTube videos which does prohibit his potential to become incredibly famous.

The use of this scenery in the background of a building and church like tower shows that he is exploring and adventuring into a new area where he has not before, for example with his inventive style of music and also it shows that he is intent on going around the world to share his music as he is American but the background certainly doesn’t look like it. This is TCTS, the photo shows he is very young meaning he has a bright future in the business ahead of him. Use of props and clothing, his long sleeve shirt he is wearing with his top button done up shows that he has a sense of class and good style too, class is very important and he tries to show that with his clothing here. His haircut is considered to be quite ‘trendy’ in this day and age too representing that he is up to date in the world of style and music. TCTS TCTS is a deep house and jackin house producer and is possibly the least famous of all the artists in my study although he is one of my favourites for his uniqueness and ability to produce great songs regularly.
- 7. His coats colour contrasts with his slightly tanned skin colour, also I think his coat is very nice and stylish, showing that he cares about what he looks like. It is also a very cool looking coat and definitely in fashion, he is up to date in the world of what trends are happening. Flume is a great example of someone who is gaining fame rapidly. He is very young and a joker of a character according to the article which went along with this photo which is shown by his pose and the use of a lollipop, mise en scene. The fact that someone is handing him the lolly shows that he relies on others to help get where he has gotten, his fans. He is licking the lolly as well which shows his playful nature as well, like his playful creative music style. FlumeFlume is a very famous house and symphonic producer of music, he is most famous for remixes of famous songs by Disclosure. His music is interchangeable, it varies all the time in every new song he releases, this shows that he is either never satisfied or he just likes change.
- 8. Here is Chris Lorenzo, jackin house tends to be more upbeat than the other genres in my magazine. You could say it was a ‘dirtier’ genre. This is shown by his T-Shirt with ‘Dirtybird’ written on it, good use of the shirt and props. His beard is very well shaven as well, representing his concentration and attention to detail shown in his music.The background appears to be a house with the number 15 on the left. A metal piece with many holes in it is featured as it makes a good background with Chris in front, good use of scenery to show his uniqueness, the house is very individual and so is he. Chris Lorenzo Chris is a jackin house producer, jackin tends to be more funky and dance-able to listen to. Chris is one of the leading lights in the genre with over 300,000 listens on his songs.
- 9. This is Thomas Jack, he is a tropical house producer and this is shown by the background being trees and plants. It gets the point across immediately. He is in a forest which is a unique location just like his music is unique as well. His shirt is very unique and individual with its pattern and colouring, this represents his music as a whole being unique and vibrant like himself. His hair is very long and wavy which does suit him very well. Thomas Jack Thomas Jack is incredibly unique in that he produces pure tropical and deep house, beach music is another way of saying it. He is not as famous as the others but his music is fantastic to listen to.
