Phylogeny? Domain Eukarya Kingdom - Animalia Phylum – Chordata Class – Reptilia
Reptilia? Crocodilia (crocodiles and alligators) Sphenodontia – includes only 2 species – tuatara from New Zealand Squamata ( worm and cold blooded lizards, snakes) Testudines ( turtles and tortoises)
Symmetry and Relations Bilateral – one plane divides the organism into two mirror halves Closely Related to: Class Amphibians Class Aves (birds)
Humans were reptiles? Around 300 million years ago Earliest known- Hylonomus Developed from Amphibians Precursors of mammals (people)
What makes them so special? Cold-blooded , as opposed to warm-blooded (humanoids, dogs, mice, elephants, etc.) Lay amniotic eggs Covered by scales or scutes Tetrapods
How do they breed? Via egg-laying ( Oviparous lizards) Turtles, Crocodilians Via live bearing Some Lizards, Some Snakes (Boas, Vipers) Baby Turtle
How do they move around? By using limbs to help glide across the ground By twisting and turning their bodies in different patterns (for snakes) Lateral undulating, straight crawling, side winding
How do they avoid predators? By using camouflage Scale patterns, blending (chameleons) Playing dead Tonic Immobility (becoming rigid) Diet change (resorting to weaker “food”)
Green Anaconda (Eunectes Murinos) Habitat : Swamps, slow moving rivers, tropical rainforests (South America) They feed on other animals. They eat almost everything that they are stronger than (which is almost everything). They even eat other reptiles. The most amazing thing to see is how an Anaconda swallows a crocodile. Genus: Eunectes Family: Boidae Order: Squamata Class: Reptilia Phylum: Chordata Kingdom: Animalia Life Cycle : Born : 70-80 cm long. No parental care. Grow for five years and reproduce. Continues growing but more slowly.
Gavial - Gavialis gangeticus Genus: Gavialis Family: Gavialidae Order – Crocodilia Class: Reptilia Phylum Chordata Kingdom: Animalia Size 7 m Famous with its long stout and precious skin Habitat: Asia – India , Nepal around water – Indus and Ganges mostly Ecology – it is under great danger of disappearing as a specie because people kill it for its skin Food: fish, insects, small mammals, birds B reed in November and then the female lays about 40 eggs
Tuatara – Sphenodon punctatus Genus: Sphenodon Family: Sphenodontidae Order: Sphenodontia Class: Reptilia Phulym: Chordata Kingdom: Animalia One of the two only survivors of the order Sphenodontia; the others died 60 million years ago and that;s why it’s called living fossil Remained the same as it was 225 million years ago Once lived in New Zealand, but they were killed by rats and people Now are found on small islands around New Zealand Lay eggs, then they reach maturity when they are 15-20 years old Can live more than 100 years Food: insects, lizards, seabird eggs
Social Skills Snake bites= death (more or less) Snake venom - used for medicine , antidotes Used for scientific research Skin used for crafting items- bags, shoes, etc.
