Abstract
In APA style, the abstract is one paragraph, which is not
indented, no more than 250 words. Do not include any
information in the abstract, which is not included in the body of
the paper. There are no citations in the abstract. The title
“Abstract” is not bolded because it is outside the body of the
paper. Be sure to see text box below for a list of required
elements for this section.
Keywords: abstract, APA style, draft (FYI: use your search
terms).

You will introduce your topic in this section of the paper. This
section should be at least a half a page minimum and no longer
than one page. Briefly describe or define the topic if the
terminology is not common knowledge. This section should full
introduce the background of your topic and explain why your
topic is relevant and/or why the literature review is needed.
You can include generalized epidemiology statistics (incidence
and prevalence) in this section to introduce your reader to your
topic, if relevant. Make sure the objectives and context of your
paper are clear, yet brief, as you will elaborate on these in the
body of your paper. Your last sentence in this section should be
a thesis or problem statement. This is a condensed version of
your argument. It should be specific and stick to one main idea
that is developed and proven through the research you detail in
your paper.
Review of Literature
You need fourpages minimum in this section in order to meet
the minimum length requirements of the rubric. The review of
literature section is only about the literature. Your sources used
in this section should be PRIMARY sources (meaning the
authors actually completed the study-they are not reviewing
someone else’s study). The sources must be published within
the past five years. Historical references are NOT allowed in
this section, but may be presented in the introduction. Only one
quotation is permitted in this section and, if included, will not
meet exemplary criteria. Quotations do NOT have a place in
scientific literature. This section should include a citation for
every paragraph at minimum, as it is a specific discussion of the
literature you reviewed. Do not include your opinion or any
correlation with your experience; these go in the discussion
sections below. Use the level two, level three and level four
headings to help you transition your thoughts in the review of
literature, if needed.
In this section, you can determine what has already been written
in relation to your topic/question(s). Identify the central issues
of the topic. Integrate what previous researchers have found.
Compare results of the studies without drawing conclusions
from the comparison (this info would go in your discussion).
Methods and Procedures
Topic Selection
In this section you will describe how you went about deciding
on your topic and research question/thesis statement. This can
be one to four paragraphs at the MOST. This may include
brainstorming, Google searches, or textbook searches to find a
topic. Then, further searching is required to see if your topic
has enough related studies.
Resource Search and Selection
Section example: A careful review of the significant literature
related to the importance of computerized dental simulators in
dental and dental hygiene education was conducted. The search
was narrowed to computer based dental simulation and virtual
learning environments in dental and dental hygiene education
limiting the search to 326 articles. Review of the abstracts was
accomplished and 23 articles were selected for incorporation
into the project.
Libraries/search engines and databases used. Section
example:Several databases were used to search for the sources
for this project. The databases were (a) Cochrane Database of
Systematic Reviews, (b) eBook Subscription Collection
(EBSCOhost), (c) Citations and Abstracts for Literature of
Nursing and Allied Health (CINHAL), (d) PubMed, and (e)
ProQuest. The websites of the American Dental Association
and the American Dental Hygienists’ Association were also
used to search for background information on dental educational
requirements. You are expected to use at least one database
such as Proquest, EBSCO (available through the PMI online
library), but you may also use Google Scholar as an additional
search resource.
Search terms. Section example:Several search terms were used
to identify sources for this project. The search terms included
(a) dental education, (b) dental hygiene education, (c)
innovations in clinical teaching, (d) computer based patient
simulation, and (e) informatics in dental education. This search
resulted in 11,213 articles. Filters were used to narrow down
the search. Describe the filters used…….
Boolean strings. Section example: One Boolean string was
used: diabetes AND foot ulcer. ORNo Boolean strings were
used.
Age of the Sources. Section example: The significant literature
will be reviewed. Only sources from the last 5 years were
considered for inclusion in the review of literature. Two
pertinent historical articles were selected to complete the
introduction section of this review. (FYI: A numeral under 10
can be used in APA formatting ONLY when referring to age.
Otherwise, you must spell it out. If 10 or over, you can use
numeral regardless of what the value is referring to.)
Discussion
In this section, you will finalize the synthesis of your review.
Identify and acknowledge areas of significant development and
of controversy within the literature. Identify important issues
and formulate questions that need further research and which
remain unresolved. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the
literature available on your topic. Express your opinion;
provided you support it with evidence and examples. Include,
and comment on, evidence of literature that contradicts your
argument, if any. Your line of argument needs to be developed
logically in paragraphs that contain one main idea each. This
entire section and the next subsection are the meat of your
review. It must be well thought out and written for your reader
to determine your analysis of the literature.
Conclusion
In this section you need to restate your topic and thesis or
problem statement. Provide a mini-summary of major
agreements and disagreements, problems, issues, etc.
(discussion section) you found in the literature and a “call of
action” statement that identifies what needs to be answered in
further research on your topic or what is missing. No new
material should be introduced-NO CITATIONS in this section.
