BIOINFORMATICS
• Bioinformatics is the science of developing computer
databases and algorithms for the purpose of speeding up and
enhancing biological research.
• Bioinformatics is the field of science in which biology,
computer science, and Information Technology (IT) merges
into a single discipline.
• The ultimate goal is to enable the discovery of new biological
insights and to create a global perspective from which
unifying principles in biology can be distinguished.
INDIAN SCENARIO
• The Bioinformatics sector in India have grown up rapidly as
IT companies have also stepped up their focus on the life
sciences.
• Indian Bioinformatics companies look forward to gather a
large chunk of the world market for bioinformatics services
such as data mining, mapping and DNA sequencing,
functional genomics, proteomics and molecule design
simulation.
• India is also witnessing the emergence of pure-play
bioinformatics companies such as Strand Genomics.
WORLD SCENARIO
• The largest markets for bioinformatics include USA, Europe
and Japan while emerging large markets include Australia,
China and India.
• A number of US based companies, like IBM, Sun
Microsystems etc. are actively working towards developing
IT based bioinformatics tools.
• Analysis software and services are anticipated to be the
fastest growing market in bioinformatics.
• Pharmaceutical companies increased their expenditure
focused towards bioinformatics.
BIOINFORMATICS IN PHARMA INDUSTRY
Drug Development
• Many potential drugs do not make it to market, and
expensive time and resources are invested in
molecules that will generate no revenue.
• Simulation and informatics can significantly increase
these by improving the efficiency of drug development,
cutting costs, and improving margins.
Formulation Design
• Formulation is the process of mixing Ingredients in such
a way as to produce a new or improved product.
• With laboratory results stored in legacy systems, it
takes expert company knowledge and experience to
know which methods and suppliers are available, let
alone to locate them quickly.
Crystallisation and Structure Determination
• The crystal structure of a drug affects how easy it is to
formulate, its bio-availability, and its shelf life.
• Knowledge of the different possible polymorphs of a
crystal can also give better patent protection for a drug.
Drug Target Identification
• One of the major thrusts of current bioinformatics
approaches is the prediction and identification of
biologically active candidates and mining and storage of
related information.
• Drugs are usually only developed when the particular
drug target for those drugs actions have been identified
and studied.
• Bioinformatics allows the identification and analysis of
more and more biological drug targets
Drug target validation
• Bioinformatics also provides strategies and algorithm to
predict new drug targets and to store and manage
available drug target information.
• After the discovery of “potential” drug targets, there is an
inappreciable need to establish a strong association
between a target and disease of interest.
• Drug target validation helps to moderate the potential for
failure in the clinical testing.
Effective medication
• Companies design drugs that satisfied the requirements
of particular genetic sub-groups of the general
population.
• The main interest is to identify patients for whom drug
efficacy can be predicted, and to reduce risk of adverse
drugs effects
Targeting RNA with small molecules
• While a majority of drugs is directed at targeting
proteins responsible for a disease, sometimes it is not
enough to suppress pathogenic processes. So RNA is
influenced before protein synthesis in order to
suppress them.
