Research in continuing education
Presented by: Shivangi Sharma
M.Sc Nursing
1st year , SNSR
Introduction
• “Let us never consider ourselves as finished
nurses….. We must be learning all our lives”
-Florence Nightingale
• The idea of continuing education in nursing is
as old as organized nursing, but the concept of
lifelong learning for the practitioner has
developed slowly.
Definition
• “Continuing education is any extension of
opportunities for reading, study and training
to young persons and adults following their
completion of or withdrawal from full-time
school and college programs”
-Dictionary of Education
Research in continuing education
• An increasing number of studies are
evaluating the effects of continuing nurse
education on practice . The relationship
between research methods and the
development of knowledge is explored by
comparing the research orientations of two
evaluative studies investigating the same
issues.
Barriers of research in CNE
• The main barrier of research in CNE is the
problem of implementing valid research results in
nursing practice.
CNE has been promoted as one way to bridge the
gap between the research and practice so that
patients may benefit. Davis et.al described
Continuing Medical Education phase in career of
a physician and this can be applied to other
health professionals especially nursing.
Cont…
• measure that can be taken to solve this barrier
can be,
I. Setting research into practice
II. Planning for improving the practice
III. Evaluation of behavioral change strategies
Setting research into practice
• Getting research into practice is not as simple
as choosing an intervention.
• Similarly administrative or financial policies
within the organizations & settings acts as an
disincentives ,but still implementing
something that are not done as usual, or
doing something new creates much
difference.
Planning for improving the practice
• It includes initial need assessment
accomplished using strategies such as self
reflection, reading, and discussion with
respected peers .
• Choosing a learning activity where often
there arises discrepancy between health
professionals preferences for a style of
continuing education and what might be most
effective in improving practice.
Evaluation of behavioral change
strategies
• Several studies have been conducted to assess
the effectiveness of CNE programmes in
behavioral change strategies and the reviews
states that CNE were effective in improving
practice.
