Agenda
What is Resistor?
•A passive electrical component with two terminals that are used for either limiting or regulating the flow of
electric current in electrical circuits.
•Resistance is designated by the symbol “R.” The unit of measurement for resistance is the ohm, symbolized by
the Greek letter omega (Ω)
•Resistors can go in the circuit either way round. The value is marked on the device with a colour code or it can
be measured with almost any multimeter.
•Purpose:
The main purpose of resistor is to reduce the current flow and to lower the voltage in any particular portion of
the circuit. It is made of copper wires which is coiled around a ceramic rod and the outer part of the resistor is
coated with an insulating paint.
Calculating Value of Resistor:
Scientific Notations :
Find out Resistor Value ?

Ohm's Law
Ohm’s law states that the voltage across a conductor is directly proportional to the current flowing
through it, provided all physical conditions and temperature remain constant.
Mathematically, this current-voltage relationship is written as,
In the equation, the constant of proportionality, R is Resistance and has units of ohms, with
symbol Ω.
The same formula can be rewritten in order to calculate the current and resistance respectively as
follows:
or
Georg Simon Ohm, a German physicist was the first to verify Ohm’s law experimentally.
Calculation of Resistance ,Current and Voltage
Voltage
•The force that causes current to flow through a conductor is called a difference in potential,
electromotive force (emf), or voltage.
•Voltage is designated by the letter “E” or the letter“V.”
• The unit of measurement for voltage is volts which is also designated by the letter “V.” A
voltage can be generated in various ways. A battery uses an electrochemical process. A car’s
alternator and a power plant generator utilize a magnetic induction process
•It can be measured with the help of Voltmeter or multimeter .
How to measure Voltage?
What is a voltmeter?
A voltmeter is an instrument used for measuring the electrical potential difference between two
points in an electric circuit. A voltmeter is an instrument used to measure the potential
difference between the two ends of a current-carrying conductor
Connection of voltmeter
A voltmeter is connected in parallel with a device to measure its voltage, while an ammeter is
connected in series with a device to measure its current.
Electric Current
•Electric Current is the rate of flow of electrons in a conductor.
•Current is measured in amperes, which is often shortened to “amps”. The letter “A” is the symbol
for amps.
•Current that constantly flows in the same direction is called direct current (DC). Current that
periodically changes direction is called alternating current (AC).
•It can be measured with the help of Ammeter or multimeter .
How to measure Current ?
What is Ammeter ?
An ammeter is a device used for the measurement of electric current. It is always connected in
series with the circuit in which the current is to be measured.
