LET’S LOOK AT SOME HELPFUL HINTS FOR
TEACHING ONLINE

•

Dr. Curt Bonk (Faculty member in the School of Education)
has put together 27 short videos about teaching online.
EDUC W200 Week 12
ANOTHER ONLINE TEACHING OPTION IS:
VIRTUAL FIELD TRIPS
• Slimmer budgets don’t mean you can’t “take” your
class to somewhere.
o It’s also more than just saving money
o Kids Learn STEM Lessons Online by Becoming Virtual
Adventurers
o “[The GoNorth! site collaboration zones] encourage kids to
create material, not just absorb it.”

• Resources to find virtual field trips:
o Center for Interactive Learning and Collaboration winners
EDUC W200 Week 12
AN IMMERSIVE ENVIRONMENT: AN ARTIFICIAL,
INTERACTIVE, COMPUTER-CREATED "WORLD”
•

•

An immersive environment could be:
o a model of reality
o a fantasy user interface or abstraction
Example:

Atlantis Remixed

These accomplishments share a common genesis: education. As the United States begins the second century of flight, the Nation must maintain its commitment to excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics education. NASA will continue the Agency’s tradition of investing in the Nation’s education programs and supporting the country’s educators who play a key role in preparing, inspiring, exciting, encouraging, and nurturing the young minds of today who will be the workforce of tomorrow.Florida Virtual School: http://www.flvs.netFlorida Virtual School (FLVS) is an established leader in developing and providing virtual K-12 education solutions to students all over Florida, the U.S. and the world. After initial success, we have expanded our mission to provide rich media solutions to the scientific, technical and medical market. Our innovations in scientific and scholarly communications enhance knowledge discovery and collaboration. The text-only world of scholarly publishing no longer suffices in the age of Internet video and social media. In science, as in life, a picture is indeed worth a thousand words. SciVee makes science visible.Earthducation: http://lt.umn.edu/earthducation/The Earthducation project evolved from nearly 10 years of delivering Adventure Learning projects to tens of millions of students and teachers around the globe. As we embarked upon our programs and collaborated with diverse cultures in locations ranging from the Arctic to the South Africa, it became evident that there were exhilarating narratives and experiences, large and small, that needed a worldwide outlet and global community. The goal of Earthducation is to address the challenge set forth by the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014, DESD) – to integrate the principles, values, and practices of sustainable development into all aspects of education and learning. Understanding these connections between education and the natural environment on local scales will enable and empower change in education on a global scale, as it provides structure for modeling new approaches to education for sustainable development.Lynda.com www.Lynda.comlynda.com is an online learning company that helps anyone learn software, design, and business skills to achieve their personal and professional goals. • #3: You can tie these videos with the students’ class prep responses. For example, students may mention the lack of hands-on activities in online learning, then you can direct their attention to Hands-on/Experiential Learning video.
  • #5: Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immersion_(virtual_reality)#Immersive_digital_environmentsThe success with which an immersive digital environment can actually immerse the user is dependent on many factors such as believable 3D computer graphics, surround sound, interactive user-input and other factors such as simplicity, functionality and potential for enjoyment.*The first link may be changed to http://atlantisremixed.org/site/view/Educators#Quest Atlantis: Learning, playing and helping in a virtual world (youtube)Show standards, classroom benefits and teacher resourcesThe Caves of Lascaux: Hidden away in the caves of Lascaux in southwest France is a 17,000 year-old painting on a stone wall, which may be one of humanity's earliest narrative compositions. Almost cartoonlike in appearance, it shows a man with the face (or mask) of a bird, engaged in an apparently fatal disagreement with a wounded bison. As the bison uses its head and horns as a weapon, the man falls stiffly back, apparently to his death. Nearby, in the same painting, are a number of other images, including a pattern of dots, a rhinoceros, and a stick with what appears to be a bird on top, all of which add to the sense that there is more to the story than we can discern, today.
