The reticular formation is located in the central core of the brainstem and controls motor functions through direct and indirect projections. It contains two reticulospinal tracts - the medial and lateral tracts - that project to different regions of the spinal cord and modulate muscle tone, reflexes, posture, and movement. The reticular formation also projects to motor control centers in the brainstem, cerebellum, basal ganglia, and cortex to regulate skeletal muscle activity during facial expressions, voluntary movement, respiration, and maintaining balance and posture.
