Alexander the Great led his troops through the Gedrosian Desert of modern-day Balochistan in 325 BC while returning from India to Persia. The march was intended to keep his fleet supplied, but poor planning led to great suffering as many soldiers and animals died of thirst, heat exhaustion and sandstorms. Alexander demonstrated strong leadership by sharing in the hardships, and encouraging his troops. He later held the Susa Weddings in 324 BC, where he and his generals married Persian women to further his policy of fusing Macedonian and Persian cultures.
