ROUTING
• Routing is a travel plan or pattern used by a
salesperson for making sales calls in a territory.
• Advantages:
1. Reduction in travel time.
2. Helps to exclude backtracking.
3. Helps to follow milk run process.
4. Helps increase territory coverage.
5. Decreases travel time and increases selling time.
Points to consider in routing plans
• Identification of present and potential customers.
• Classification of customers
• Call frequency of each customer to be decided.
• Routing plan should be built around locations of
high potential customers.
• Minimization of travel time and maximization of
selling time.
Types of routing
• Straight line approach:
Sales calls are made in one direction.
• Circular approach:
• Sales calls are made starting from base at the
centre to customers in a circular pattern.
• Clover leaf approach:
Trips are decided and in one trip one part of
territory is considered.
Application and importance of routing
• The degree of importance to the application
of routing depends on two factors:
1. The nature of the product. In this case the
product is a durable product hence flexible
routing plans can be followed.
2. Type of job of the sales officer. Here, the
routing would depend on the territory
coverage and territory association of the
sales officer.
Load Logic
• Load logic can be said to be the planning and
commissioning of methods and means to
deliver the consignment requested by the
customer, keeping the distances of the
customers in consideration.
• It will depend on the loading styles to be
followed according to the location of customers.
• It will rely on the density of the market and will
in turn determine the number of bodies to be
commissioned for the process.
Means to be adopted
• Roadways
a) Heavy haulers
b) Local transport
• Trains
• Waterways
Advantages of applying load logic
• Ease in handling
• Cost effectiveness
• Time efficiency
• Improve accuracy of revenue forecasts
• Align inventory level with peaks and troughs in
demand.
• Enhance profitability for a given channel.
• Increase efficiency of planning.
