Cal Poly University Union
Programming Plan
By: Loren Dean, Fiona Cullen, Josie Mueller, Courtney Bramers
Background
In Fall 2014, Cal Poly began researching and evaluating the needs of students
and what they desired to get out of the University Union.
● Over 4,800 students took the online survey.
● The purpose of this report is to assess the viability of improving and
expanding the existing Julian A. McPhee University Union.
● The university contracted Brailsford & Dunlavey, Inc. (B&D) to put together
surveys, focus groups, and a final report.
Purpose Statement
● To assess the viability of improving and expanding the existing Julian A.
McPhee University Union
Research Questions
● Should the university pose a fee of
$185-205 per quarter to improve
the facilities in the University
Union?
● What would students like to see
improved if the University Union
were to be renovated?
● How high of a priority are
University Union renovations to Cal
Poly students?
Evaluation Methods Used
● Researchers did a series of focus
groups with stakeholders
● Researchers created and analyzed data
from an online survey given to
Cal Poly students
Data Analysis and Display
● Cal Poly created both an
infographic highlighting the
responses to their research
questions as well as a 44 page
final report.
Strengths of Evaluation Methods
● Data was gathered from a variety of stakeholders, not just students
● Focus groups and written/online surveys were used to get both qualitative
and quantitative data used in writing final report
Weaknesses of the Evaluation Method
● Only 26.7% of Cal Poly students
took the UU survey, which may
make it difficult to generalize the
findings to the entire Cal Poly
population.
● People were confused on where
the fee would be coming from
Conclusion and What We Learned
● We really like the thoroughness of this report and the graphics and charts
that accompanied the analysis.
● They were easy to read and provided good support for the written portions
of this report.
● We also liked that B&D used both focus groups and the online survey
which gave them more well-rounded data from a variety of sources such
as faculty and staff, and not just students.
