Summary
Summarization Frame-Expository Writing
To summarize expository writing efficiently and effectively, students must consider the
text’s global main idea and then support it with details. The best way to support this sort
of main idea statement is through the use of text features, like subheadings. If there are
subheadings, students may provide support for the text’s main idea by giving the
subsections general gist or main idea. An appropriate way to end a summary is for the
reader to reflect on the author’s purpose for the article.

The article title, is mostly about main
idea. (Detail 1 from 1st Subheading) -

____________________________.
The author most likely wrote this
article to (author’s purpose).
Summarization Frame-Narrative Writing
It is useful for students to pull these parts out of the text before writing the summary by
using an appropriate graphic organizer. Remind children that brevity is the key with all
   summaries.

The story, (title) is mostly about (main

idea). The story starts out when (main

character/s) are in/at (setting). The story

begins when (tell what takes place at the

beginning of the story). Next, (tell what

takes place at the middle of the story).

Finally, (tell what takes place at the end

of the story). The author most likely

wrote this story (author’s purpose).
