 The Rules of the Game

BRAINSTORMING: Culture & The Rules of the Game

DIRECTIONS: The purpose of this worksheet is to help you brainstorm some ideas for creating
your “game piece.” Think about the experiences we’ve had so far, and answer the questions to
help you formulate your ideas! Answer questions up to the level of your own comfort - you are
not in any way obligated to write anything you are not comfortable sharing!

     cul•ture |ˈkəl CH ər|
     noun
the customary beliefs, social norms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social
group; also : the characteristic features of everyday existence (as diversions or a way of
life) shared by people in a place or time
you can also think about it like this: the shared beliefs of a group with whom you identify.

     SOME EXAMPLES:
        - ethnicity (Chinese-American, Black, Pakistani, African-American, Dominican,
            Italian-American, American Indian, etc.)
        - geographic (Southerner, Northerner, Californian, Pittsburgher, etc.)
        - religious affiliation (Muslim, atheist, Christian, Jewish, agnostic, spiritual,
            Hindu, non-religious, etc.)
        - gender (female, male, other identification, etc.)
        - politics-based (Republican, Democrat, Independent, liberal, conservative,
progressive, libertarian, feminist, Tea Party, Occupy Wall Street, etc.)
        - interest-based (soccer player, Anime enthusiast, gamer, photographer, “camp
person,” poet, “in a band”/musician, etc.)
        - school-based (friend groups, social groups, sports groups, etc.)
        - other (only child, adopted, “blended” family, single-parent household, personal
orientation, friend/relative/self is a person with a disability, vegetarian, vegan,
            “city person”, “country person,” etc.)

1. What are some of the cultures to which you belong? Make a list - but leave room to write
next to each one. Use the definition above as a guide if you feel stuck.
2. What “rules” or expectations exist for these cultures? Write these rules next to your list
in question 1 - or, if you need more space, use another sheet of paper.

3. What “benefits” does one receive by being part of these cultures?

4. What “obstacles” does one encounter by being part of these cultures?

5. Begin thinking about your “game piece” - what cultures have you described that you think
you might like to use? You can combine several of your cultures if you like. Also - you can
use a culture that you would like to explore for this project even if it is one that you DO
NOT identify with. (We will talk about examples of what this could look like in class.)

What culture(s) will you use for this project?:

Make sure you have written an answer to all the questions on this worksheet so far
     regarding your chosen culture.

6. Draw and/or list some ideas for what your game piece will look like, and what it will
“do” (in an imaginary game.) Use extra paper if you need it:

                                                         WORKSHEET: /40
