Sample Your Own Space
You’ll never know what’s living in your own ecosystem if you don’t get
down on your hands and knees and explore. By observing a small sample
of your environment, you can get a good idea about the plant and animal
interactions going on there. After completing the steps below, make
sketches and answer the questions to conduct a detailed study of your site.

    • Find a convenient area (the grassier the better).
    • Measure out a square that is 1 meter all around. Place sticks at each
      corner of the square.
    • Tie string to the sticks to make the square.

1. First observe the plant life in your site. Make sketches and write down
detailed descriptions. Use a field guide to find out names of the plants
you find. If you can’t find the name, make one up.

Sample Your Own Space
2. How many different types of plants did you find?

3. Which is the smallest plant? The biggest?

4. Which plant did you find the most of? The least?

5. What do the plants you found have in common?

6. Next observe the animal life in your site. Make sketches and describe
   any animals you see.
