TIPS TO SELECT A ENGINEERING
B.TECH /M.TECH FINAL PROJECTS BY
REAL TIME EXPERTS
Project work is a vital component of UG engineering curriculum. Engineering students have to take
up this activity during 7th and 8th semester. It is good if project work is initiated during 7th semester
with literature survey. Doing a successful project is much more difficult than studying 40 theory
courses and doing more than ten laboratories.
For projects, generally the batch size should be not more than three. Students of Electrical and
Electronics Engineering should remember the following points while deciding the project.
 Firstly they should decide whether they want to carry out hardware oriented project or a
software/simulation oriented one.
 Secondly, whether to do it in the college or in industry/R&D organization.
 Thirdly, documentation part,
 Finally presentation of their project to the committee.
Industry Oriented: The academic curriculum of any university in our state is unfortunately lacking
the industry component. Hence, it would be a great opportunity for the students if they can get
permission to work for their project in industries/R&D organizations such as BHEL R&D, DRDL,
NTPC, AP Transco, KTPS, ECIL, NFC, among many others. Don’t ignore even medium level
companies that offer reasonable project opportunities. They can apply their theoretical concepts in
projects and see the results.
BHEL R&D unit is one of the Navratnas in the country and has excellent R&D facilities in power
electronic systems lab, power systems lab, control systems lab, electrical machines lab etc., where
the students can work in control of induction motor drives, FACTS controllers, Fault analysis of
power systems and on PLCs. They do have simulation packages which helps the student to learn
design aspects with modelling and simulation.
ECIL also has project learning centre they offer very good projects in microprocessor and micro
controller area. Micro controllers and digital signal processing courses are covered in theory, but
practice on these controller based experiments is minimal. Hence choosing Microcontroller/DSP
based projects for control drives or power system application will certainly influence when they go for
interviews.
SCADA related projects, substation equipment maintenance, numerical relays testing, protection of
various equipment used in 400KV substation, performance of Gas insulated substation, etc., can be
better in APTRANSCO. Working in NTPC, KTPS, NFC and Hydel power plants will also give better
exposure of the components they study in the theory. Working on PLCs used in the control of
various parameters in the process of power generation, can add a good value to the project.
Hardware Oriented: Of late, renewable energy has emerged as one of the most preferred research
topic for many researchers across the globe. Because of non-pollution, technical, economical and
societal benefits, solar, wind, bio-mass based plants are gaining increasing popularity. Student’s job
prospects also will imrove if he can do a considerable project in this area. Students can take up
Solar-PV based projects. Unregulated DC is converted into regulated DC by means of DC-DC
converter (Isolated/non-Isolated) or can be converted in to regulated AC by using DC-AC converter
(inverter) with any of various PWM mechanisms available in the literature and run DC or AC motors.
These projects can be done in the college itself with the support of teachers of the department. They
can think of Solar-PV green energy used for water sprinklers in the lawns of the college (without any
battery back-up), or solar based LED display for electronic notice boards which can be used by the
departments for circulars. Funding also can be expected from the college for doing such projects. PV
panels are available with low rating to very high rating at different places in Hyderabad and major
cities. They can even think about having portable wind mill on the college bus they travel and use
PWM converter (because wind speed is not constant) and the power generated can be used for
charging the cell phones and lighting in the bus.
For this kind of innovative and interesting projects they can check some websites
like,www.howstuffworks.com , www.electronicsforu.com and IEEE projects
website,http://ieeexplore.ieee.org too. Most of us are aware that, road accidents are taking place
mainly when there are deep curves on the road. Especially during nights accidents rate is very high.
Sensor-based Solar-PV curve indicators (Microcontroller/DSP based) can be given a thought by
them to avoid accidents. When a head light of any automobile falls on solar based sensor, it should
sense the light and makes the controller active and indicates there is danger curve ahead. The
battery can be charged during day with Solar-PV panel and the same may be used during night.
Simulation Oriented: There are some softwares like MATLAB, PSCAD, Mi-Power, Power world
available for carrying projects by EEE students. MATLAB is very powerful software and it has
various tool boxes such as power system, DSP, NN, Fuzzy, Control systems tool boxes. They can
do projects by developing code in MATLAB or they can develop systems with Simulink/tool boxes
and execute. It is such a powerful tool even there are IEEE papers published with the work on this
software. Graduate students can seek help from their teachers in the college and can do very
impressive projects on MATLAB.
Making a Report: After the completion of project, documentation of theory behind the work,
implementation procedures, calculations involved, conclusions along with the scope for future work
must be put in the thesis in a systematic way. Never do copy and paste in the document. Better if
figures are drawn using software like Microsoft-Visio, ECAD etc. References must be included at the
end of the report.
Presentation of Work: Container should be better than contained. Presentation of their work to the
committee constituted by external examiner, project coordinator and internal guide is the last but not
least part of the project work. They have to prepare 15-20 slides on their work and present
impressively. Do not put equations and excessive matter in the slide. Essence of one page should
come in a single line in the slide. Never forget to acknowledge the support given by your teachers,
friends, academic assistants in the presentation.
Plan well before work and work with the plan……success is yours ultimately.
Have a wonderful career ahead.
