Lesson 1 Lecture
Lesson Summary: This lesson we will discuss exactly what CAM is and why it is
becoming more popular. As well as discussing the most familiar CAM practices and
where they came from and how they came to the US.
Lesson Content:
What is CAM?
CAM is short for Commentary and Alternative Medicine, however people in the
U.S. sometimes refer CAM to “integrative medicine.” CAM focuses on medicines that
offer a variety of treatments that are outside the range of conventional medicine.
the whole body, mind and soul. Most of the alternative medicine practices came
from China. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative
Medicine (NCCAM), they found that nearly 30 percent of adults and nearly 12
percent of children use some form of complementary and alternative medicine in
the United States.
Why do patients seek CAM treatments?
Some patients want to see what other options are out there besides just going to
their regular physician. In the complementary medicine, it is the healing practice
and products that work within the traditional medicine. In Alternative medicine, is
the use of a substitute for the traditional medicine. An example of complementary
medicine is a person who has cancer may look into acupuncture to help with the
sickness for the chemo treatments. An example of Alternative medicine is that a
cancer patient may look for other holistic treatments to cure their cancer versus
getting chemo/radiation treatments.
Most Familiar CAM Practices
There are a wide variety of complementary and alternative practices. In the next
two lessons I will go into great detail about the four most popular ones used in the
United States. They are Chiropractic, Acupuncture, Mediation and Yoga. Some
people don’t realize that mediation and yoga can be considered a healing practice.
People think yoga of some type of exercise program instead of looking at a healing
practice for your body. Some other familiar CAM practices are tai chi, qi gong,
healing touch, hypnotherapy, and movement therapies. Ayurvedic medicine,
traditional Chinese medicine, homeopathy, and naturopathy.
Lesson 2 Lecture
LessonSummary: This lesson will go over how chiropractic and acupuncture is a great
alternative medicine. We will discuss what each of them off and how they can benefit
someone and in what ways. We will also discuss the similarities and differences of them.
I will also have two guest speakers come to discuss how they picked their profession and
what they do in their office. As well as, they will demonstrate some techniques and take
questions about their profession.
LessonContent:
Chiropractic and Acupuncture
Chiropractic and Acupuncture practices have been around for decades, but are
now being looked at more in the U.S. This is because more people are turning to
Alternative medicine for more options to help with certain pains/diseases. Some
chiropractors will learn how to do acupuncture so they can offer more to their clients.
Chiropractic
Some people believe that a chiropractor is not a doctor. However, they through
just as much medical school as the doctors do. The one main difference between medical
doctors and chiropractors is that a medical doctor looks at your condition and treats it
with medicine, while chiropractors look at how to structurally changing the internal
condition without the use of drugs. With this being said, some people are scared to visit a
chiropractor due to the fact of the adjustment. They are afraid the adjustment may do
more harm than good. Chiropractors are so well trained just like doctors you just have to
put your faith into them. Chiropractors are professionals that focus on a person’s nervous
system and their spine by performing adjustments to the proper area. Some chiropractors
do adjustments manually or with the Activator Method Chiropractic Technique. This
technique is a small hand-held device that sends a gentle pulse force to the targeted area.
List of symptoms that seeing a chiropractor could help:
 Headaches
 Stress
 Low Energy
 Shoulder and Arm Pain
 Carpal tunnel Syndrome
 Leg Pain (Sciatica)
 Arthritis Pain (Joint Stiffness)
 Work or Sports Injury
 Arm/Leg Numbness and Tingling

Acupuncture
Acupuncture was first started in China and was consider to be a part of the
Traditional Chinese Medicine. Acupuncture is done with tiny needles and they are
inserted into your skin at specific points to stimulate positive energy flow. A theory
called chi, states that the energy will flow through and around the pathways in the
body called meridians. Some earlier believers say that way your positive energy
was blocked or your chi was blocked, acupuncture would help unblock and let the
positive flow again. The Acupuncturists will need to feel your pulse and look at
your tongue to help gain information about your health. To be a licensed
acupuncturist, you must attend a 3-4-year graduate program and complete 2,000
clinical hours of internship. Some acupuncturists work with a chiropractor in the
same office.
Acupuncture is stated to help relieve
 back/neck pain
 osteoarthritis
 knee pain
 headaches
Risks of Acupuncture are:
• Soreness. After the procedure you have some soreness or bruising in the areas the
needles were placed.
• Organ injury. This is a rare risk and it occurs when the needles are pushed into
deeply.
• Infections. Making sure your Acupuncturists using new needles every time will
help prevent infection.

Lesson 3 Lecture
LessonSummary: This lesson will focus mainly on Mediation and Yoga! How can
these two CAM practices help relieve stress. We will at the end of mediation perform a
20-minute meditation and at the end of yoga discussion we will perform 20 minutes of
beginner yoga techniques.

body feel relaxed. It can also release lot of tension from your body that may come from
your work day. When doing yoga, you need to remember to listen to your body and only
perform poses that you are comfortable doing especially in the beginning. Not only does
yoga help reduces stress it also can improve your cardiovascular health. There are several
different yoga types like, prenatal, hot yoga, chakras, restorative yoga, yoga hybrids, and
