3 sessions that are one and a half hours each session.
Course Description:
This course will look to inform individuals of the health concerns that can develop due to stress.
Introductions to vitamins and herbal medicine that can help with stress, understanding
terminology related and different forms herbs are available. Understanding massage therapy and
health benefits that is offers. Massage therapy and how it helps with stress. Exercise that will
help with stress for at home and work. The use of mindful meditation by practicing the health
benefits it can offer and the different mindset and dealing with stress.
No Prerequisites
Course Objectives:
1. Understand stress and its effects on health and disease.
2. Understand supplements herbal medicine, knowing the different forms that herbs are
available.
3. Understanding terminology related to herbs.
4. Understanding massage therapy and health benefits is reducing stress and its affects.
5. Understanding how to find a qualified massage therapist
6. Supportive choices when stressed including exercise during those stressful times.
7. Introduction to mindful meditation and understanding.
8. Understanding how mindful meditation works and the benefits it can offer to help change
Views and help find solutions.
9. Experience a guided mediation session.
Participants will be requested to dress casually for all sessions. Please make sure you bring a
note book and pen or pencil to take notes.

Lesson 1
Lesson Summary: Stress and its effects on health .Physiological and mental signs of stress.
Introduction to supplements and herbal medicine and understanding why this is an option and
why it may help. List of herbs that help with stress understanding the terminology related to
these herbs.
Lesson Content:
Fight or flight response chemical responses and how they affect the body. Will discuss increased
Adrenalin responses and effects on the body. Cortisol production and what it effects on the body
and memory. Physiological effects of chronic stress. Understanding herbal medicine to help
combat the effects of stress. Understanding stress and why we feel the way we do.
Understanding herbal medicine to help combat the effects of stress. Introduction to herbal
medicine as well as terminology related to the herbs that will be presented. Guide on steps to
take when considering herbal medicine and supplements precautions and suggestions. Herbs and
what is available forms tinctures, teas, tablets and powders. Always recommend that individual

What herbs help with stress? Looking at herbs that are in a category known as adapogens. These
plants or phytotherapy that are plants used for their healing properties. Adapogens are important
because they offer the ability for the body and mind to deal with stress. Adaptogens to be
discussed are Ashwaganda, Licorice root, Rhodiola. Astragolus root.

How do I find these herbs and how should they be taken? Most of the herbs that are discussed
can be purchased over the counter without a prescription. You can purchase them at a health
market that sells herbs and supplements. You are also able to purchase them on line. Herbs are
offered in tinctures, teas, tablets and powders. Follow the directions on the label on how to take
them and how much. Do not exceed what is recommended and do not use more than one herbal
adaptogen.
Herbal medicine vs prescribed medication? Medication are chemical based compounds that
when taken for long periods of time may become addictive. Herbal medicine are natural plant

based and are not addictive they are used during periods of time of stress coast are much less
than medication and are available over the counter.

Lesson 2
Lesson Summary: Massage therapy understanding different forms of massage. Introducing
background of finding qualified massage therapist. Additional supportive dietary and excessive
that helps during stressful time. Learning the how to during these times.
Lesson Content:
Looking at physiological benefits of massage. Most Americans are operating under stress we are
a stressed society. Understanding that massage brings on physical relaxation. Massage bring on
breathing changes, reduces heart rate and lowers blood pressure. Massage improves circulation
and that circulation brings nourishment to the cells and moves away waste from cells. How
relaxing massage reduces the effects of stress hormones. Looking at different forms of massage
chair massage, sports massage, deep muscle massage and the recommended massage for
relaxation Swedish massage. We will look at stretching to be incorporated to massage to help
reduced tightened muscles affected by stress. There is a mood elevation and helps eliminate
depression. Sleep and quality of sleep improves to a deeper more restful. People due to stress
over time may experience insomnia and a mind that is not at ease massage will bring that into a
balanced state as effects of massage mind is more at ease and sleep is improved.

Finding a reputable massage therapist. Licensing in the state of Florida. If a massage therapist is
licensed they have completed the education that is needed to be licensed in the state. They will
have taken one of two exams NCETMB this exam was an older exam used for massage therapist.
This included National Certification as well as licensure. The most updated exam is MBLEx and
is the most updated exam that includes National Certification and licensure.
Time for questions and answers.
When stressed additional guides to help support yourself physically and mentally by choosing
smart well prepared meals. Eat smaller portioned well balanced meals. Drink water through the
day. Eliminate caffeinated drinks like caffeinated tea and especially coffee. Avoid fast food,
sugar and junk food. The body may crave the quick fix but is the worst choice since it will drop
you fast. Food choices that are prepared quickly open forum to talk of what people can prepare.
Potions of protein, good carbohydrates and vegetable. An easy guide of a portion using the palm
of the hand.

Recommended when time is a factor walking is the best form of exercise when time is an issue
and someone is under stress. Walking can be done alone, with partners and spouse, with families
as a family activity. You can have headphones and listen to music to enhance your mood. It is
available when at home or breaks at work.

Lesson 3
Lesson Summary: Introduction to what mindful meditation and what it can do for stress and
peace of mind. Introduction of breathing as a stress reducer as breathing to be used for mindful
meditation and as stress reducer on its own.
Lesson Content:
When mindful meditation is practiced it offers the individual many benefits. The practice offers
reduced stress, It helps with clarity and to find solutions to issue and experience improved
concentration. Physiological benefits such as with continued practice improvement in
cardiovascular and immune health.
Open forum to see how many people have experienced mindful meditation. Explore the
impressions participants have of the idea or introduction of mindful meditation.

Discuss video get feedback. Present the idea of time and solution to incorporate meditation
through the day.in the car at work. Using breathing at your desk. Time at night before bed
instead of watching television working with mindful meditation sessions to clear the mind and
sleep more peacefully. To wake rested and possibly have solution to issues that may have been
the stress from the day before. Using and practicing to become more self-aware.
Introduction of the recommended book A Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Workbook by B.
Stahl and E Goldstein, Inform every one of the CD to help practice Mindful meditation sessions .

Feedback from class participants on what they saw and experienced. Provide answers to help
understand mindful meditation. Everyone will be walked through breathing, understand how to
handle interruptive thought and how to reengage meditation. Give a break 10 minutes and when
they return they will fix chairs and be guided through a 15 minute mindful meditation.
When finished participants will have a few minutes to collect themselves and open the floor once
again answering questions before finishing session 3.
