Editor's Notes

  • #2: Good Morning Class of 2021 and welcome to your library orientation, I am Julie Sarpy and I am your COM Liaison Librarian. HPD has so many programs that we designate a reference librarian to assist each specific one. So, I am the one for COM.
  • #3: In other words, I am your point person for library resources: books, databases, and journals My email is jsarpy@nova.edu. My office hours are 7:30-4 pm M-F. If I am not there you can email the library at hpdref@nova.edu and the first available librarian will respond to your request.
  • #4: Before I start - I want to let you know where you can find a copy of this presentation so you don’t have to worry about writing down everything and remembering everything. From the HPD Library Homepage which is www.nova.edu/hpdlibrary, then click on the icon for Osteopathic Medicine. All of the resources I will speak about today can be found on this homepage or the library guide.
  • #5: On the libguide tabs you should see a page for [M1 Textbooks] And if you click on that tab, you should see a page I created for you which contains a hyperlinked Textbook List. Also I want to mention that my contact info is on that page so of you ever need to get in touch with me, all of my info is right there under my picture.
  • #6: A copy of this presentation is located at the bottom lM1 textbook page. And I have hyperlinked textbook list. So the hyperlink will bring you into the book’s landing page, in whatever database the book is available. For Harrison’s Principle of Internal Medicine 19th edition. Click on the link that says available via – Access Medicine.
  • #7: Before you access any of the eResources you will need to authenticate. Because these are paid databases, they basically want to know who is paying for your access, so that is what the authentication does. It identifies that you are an NSU student and that you have access via the NSU subscription. Use your Sharklink Username & Password. Your Username is everything before the @ symbol in your NSU email address. For example my email address jsarpy@nova.edu, so my username is jsarpy.
  • #8: You are now into what is essentially a table of contents of Harrison’s. If any of you have read an ebook before on a personal device such as your Kindle or Nook, you notice it does not look the same as print., but it has the same content. This is just one of many ebooks that are in the Access Medicine collection. In addition to the text and images it also has additional “bonus” material such as Interactive Self Assessments and any multimedia/videos that accompany the book. You can also use the Search box to search for a specific topic in the book. If I click on show Chapters
  • #9: It opens up and than I can read my desired section.
  • #10: This is your current M1 Class 2021 required textbook page. I wanted to make your that you were familiar with the content of the page, as books are grouped by specialty and semester. Your simtics , doc.com links , along with, a copy of this orientation will be found down at the of the page.
  • #11: Just Two tabs over on your Libguide from M1 textbooks you will find the Student Info and Resources Tab.
  • #12: If you click on that tab, you can find out general information on what the library has to offer. This a helpful ready reference for everything HPD Library if you have any questions.
  • #13: You will see information about room numbers and a map to HPD. Essentially, HDP consists of 3 buildings in a sequence 1,2,3 with the Assembly ii building next door. The first number in you room number is building. The second is the floor and the last two are the room designation. We are in the Steele Auditorium. The room number is 2100. This is the second building, first floor, and rm 00.
  • #14: You can also find information about Endnote. This is our citation management software. Some of you might familiar with refworks or Zotero or Mendeley. At Nova, we offer endnote free for all students,. You can import citations from databases, Keep track & manage PDFs, Insert citations into your paper in a wide variety of styles (APA, AMA, MLA) using MS Word and other word processors, and it also builds your reference list at the end of your paper. There are instructions there on how to set it up, if you have any trouble you can come into the library with your laptop and we can help you. Endnote installation can be a bit tricky on a MAC.
  • #15: Two more tabs over on the COM libguide, you will see the procedures & case studies tab. Click on it to find links to step by step procedure guides, videos and links to clinical cases. Please make sure that your computer supports the software, i.e. flash supported browsers.
  • #16: Under the boards test prep tab, you will find links to tests prep resources and Qbanks or test question banks, such as Combank, First Aid and Exam Master that will help prepare you for your boards.
  • #17: I also created a Comlex Study Guides tab. Resources are divided by steps 1, 2, and 3 and by specialty. I also have link to study tips and some apps and e-resources that can help you study for exams.
  • #18: Links to the various editions of USMLE First Aid Test Prep can be found under First Aid Books
  • #19: You will find the Q Bank for the USMLE, COMLEX and Medical Certification and Medical Subjects under the Exam Master Tab.
  • #20: Access Medicine is a great resource. In addition to case files, e-books, and videos, you can take self-assessments to quiz yourself and check your progress. There are also links to flash cards and a quiz-bowl game that you can play.
  • #21: You can generate multiple-choice quizzes from the resources below. You will have to create a user account to use the review questions.. If you Click on study tools, review questions will appear in the drop-down menu.
  • #22: You can use the flashcards to review for the COMLEX
  • #23: Under the multimedia and images tab , you will find links and information about videos and images that the library has that can help you in your labs.
  • #24: You see the library has anatomy tv which is a versatile digital resource, featuring an interactive 3D skeleton which brings functional anatomy to life using accurate 3D anatomy and animation. We also have bates physical examination which shows you head-to-toe and systems-based physical examination techniques. Aclands’s video atlas uses 3-D images to illustrate anatomical structures. You all know rosetta stone
  • #25: Under the Mobile/ Apps tab you can see a list of HPD Apps . You have access to some through resource subscriptions and some you can check out at the library circulation desk for 30 days.
  • #26: You have to know where the library is to check out a circulating app.
  • #27: The Library is located in the North end of the Health Professions Division Building. Just to the right of Juiceblendz through the doors.
  • #28: Here are the library hours. Although the library itself is open 7 to midnight most days. The reference room is not. My hours are Monday to Friday 7:30-4 pm. Generally, someone is here from 8:30-5 that can help you with your reference questions, even if I am not available. There are always extended hours during finals that the library itself is open.
  • #29: Here is the doorway to the front of the library.
  • #30: We are under construction. So during the library renovation there are no study rooms. If you would like a private study room you have check out one at Alvin Sherman Library. Otherwise you can sit at one the carrolls in the hallway or in the library. They are first come first serve. Phase 1 of the renovations should be completed by December and we will have a few study rooms available for check out . Not all because in Phase II of the renovation the other half of the library will be closed. SO we will not be at full capacity yet.
  • #31: However, the quiet study zone will be back in some form or fashion in Phase 1.
  • #32: So your shark card is your library card. It is just one card that can be used for all of your student services, specifically in terms of the library it provides building access.
  • #33: You do have an annual pay for print account of $75 dollars and that starts next month.
  • #34: We have a mediascape collaboration area you can share each other’s computer, if you are working on a group project.. Just make a reservation at the front desk.
  • #35: We also have a studio in the library where you can rehearse presentations or if you need to record a video and can also make a reservation at the circulation desk.
  • #36: We have comb binding machines which are quite popular with students at the circulation desk.
  • #37: There are anatomy models which you can use but they must remain the in the library.
  • #38: We also have tech assistance. His name is Aaron and if you need help downloading an app or with a computer issue, just come to the library and ask for him. He is there everyday and is an invaluable asset if you have Endnote installation troubles.
  • #39: We are also in the library. We here are here M_F from 8:30-5, but you can call or email us if you have an issue and will get back with you as soon as we can.
  • #40: The Library has a Keurig machine for students, k-cup are available for a $1 after Juiceblendz closes.
  • #41: We have free faxing and notary services.
  • #42: There is a Water Bottle filling station in the library
  • #43: Because the student lounge is just above the library, we have a few items that you can check out for recreation such as ping pong paddles and pool cues.
  • #44: Again, the circulating books will no longer be housed in the library and will permanently be in off site storage. If you need a book you can request that it be sent to you through ILL and you will received an email when it is available and you can pick it up at circulation counter. The loan period is for 30 days.
  • #45: Reserve books will still be available in the library proximate to the circulation desk. These generally textbooks that the library has made available for student in case you have forgotten your books at home and need to briefly review or look up some information.
  • #46: Not coming back to library. You can request an article be send to you through document delivery.
  • #47: You, as students, do have access to the 3-D printers. They are free for all students faculty and staff for health-related purposes. Just come to the library and ask for John Reynolds, emerging technologies librarian, if he is not there ask for Aaron, and either can help you will your project.
  • #48: We do have computer computers that you can use in the library. Right now they are located in the OIIT computer lab., instead off the circulation counters. The lab is going to be reconfigured during Phase II of construction, but computer access will be somewhere in the library although it might be limited.
  • #49: Shifting gears a bit and returning to the library electronic resources. Doc Com is a resource that helps you learn medical communication skills. Doc Com or doctor communication is comprised of 42 media-rich modules with over 400 video clips that demonstrate a variety of communication skills. The link to its instruction page can be found at the bottom of your M1 textbook page.
  • #50: One of our new resources is Simtics. SIMTICS offers innovative online simulations for learning how to perform sonography, radiography, medical, basic nursing, and other healthcare procedures. • #59: When you do, you can browse on ALL NSU Databases by Subject or by Material Type. I just wanted to make sure that you aware of some of the other resources you have access to and that you might be interested in using. EX: In the SUBJECT category….Chemistry, Education, Law, Psychology and the MATERIAL TYPE Grants, Statistical Sources and Tests & Measurements. These links search all 4 NSU Libraries: Alvin Sherman, Law, Oceanographic, and HPD. See As students have access to more resources than you might have initially thought.
