GPO’s Federal publication acquisition role
Each Federal agency is responsible for decision making
about its own information products.

GPO acquires Federal agency publications that the issuing
agencies choose to publish, and GPO
               distributes and disseminates them.

                Mission
                 • Identify, acquire, classify, catalog, and
                    disseminate Government publications.
                 • Codified in 44 U.S.C. §§1901 – 1916,
                    1710-1711, and 4101 -4104.

                                                               2
Communication when the news broke -
      GPO and the Census Bureau
• GPO and the Census Bureau’s Statistical Compendia
  Branch staff got in touch.
• Three Branch staff visited GPO and met with LSCM staff,
sharing information about the status of the Branch
  publications.
   – Our role is to inform the public of plans and decisions.
• GPO updated publication information.
   – Statistical Abstract, State and Metropolitan Area Data Book, County and
City Data Book, and USA Statistics in Brief discontinued.
   – USA Counties and State and County QuickFacts continue.

The Statistical Abstract Challenge
               Presented by Dan Coyle

           What were the major challenges?

• Maintain continuity with the past.
• Analyze the content of every table and find the
  updated data.
• License the copyright material.
• Find the right agency contact.
• Develop a publishing platform.
• Update and review the tables.
• Complete the project in 8 months!

                                                    8

                                                        4
We had some things going for us

• Coverage of Federal statistical publications for
  the past 40 years.
• 25 statistical editors and content analysts.
• 6 acquisitions and licensing specialists focused
  on statistical content.
• Pre-existing licenses with 30% of the non-
  Federal providers.
• Opportunity to find efficiencies through
  technology.

                                                     9
