Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

Scanning tunneling microscopy uses a sharp tip to scan samples at the atomic level. Researchers carefully place samples near the tip and use Easy Scan software to allow the computer to slowly approach the sample for scanning. The scan results and a green or red light will indicate if the approach was successful or if the tip crashed into the sample. Fourier transforms and filtering techniques are also used to clarify scanning images at the atomic level.
