The processor, also known as the central processing unit (CPU), is a microchip implanted in the CPU's hard drive that processes instructions sent to it by the computer and software. It interprets and carries out basic instructions to operate the computer and direct other hardware devices by processing digital information and providing data. The CPU contains a control unit that directs operations by controlling input/output, and an arithmetic logic unit (ALU) that performs mathematical, logical, and decision operations and sends processed information to memory.
