This document discusses scientific notation and its rules. Scientific notation is used to write very large or very small numbers in a simpler way by moving the decimal point and using an exponent. There are four rules: 1) only the zeros after the first digit are replaced by an exponent, 2) there is one non-zero number before the decimal, 3) a negative exponent is used when moving the decimal right, and 4) a positive exponent is used when moving the decimal left.
