Sunderland became dependent on the shipyards for all their local economy. This meant that in 1980, when almost all of the Shipyards were closed, it brought a massive economical destruction to the city... Interview with someone that lives in Sunderland and their opinion on the future. BAILEY Trying to replicate the once strong economy within Sunderland, the council started with a forty five million pound investment into turning Sunderland into the manufacturing capital of the UK. Footage of the Nissan Warehouse being built. BAILEY However, even with this investment, Sunderland has never been able to replicate what it once was. BAILEY It has been recently been named one of the worst places to live within the UK and many local people believe that it has just been abandoned. Sunderland is the main city within the north that has been neglected, however the stereotype around the whole north is still strong. People believe it is dirty, unclean and there is nothing to do... ALNWICK Images of the mighty alnwick, abandoned alnwick and then the current alnwick. BAILEY From a mighty bordered fortress, to abandoned and neglected, to then back to what it is now... Alnwick has been through alot. Images of Harry potter and transformers also play while talking. BAILEY In recent years, it was used to film Harry POtter and transformers. So if your into any of them, it's a good look around. Footage of alnwick plays and matches with the voiceover. Not only does alnwick have its historical values, but it is also great for the kids. Everyday and all day, there are activities going on throughout the castle to get them involved. Also if you just want to go for a coffee, there's a treehouse to sit in and chill with a coffee. Where can you go? well another great option is Bamburgh.

BAILEY It's got great scenery,it's a lovely place to sit, the people are nice and it's not too expensive. its Just over half an hour from Sunderland... So let's take a look. B-roll of bamburgh BAILEY gettinging into the castle itself does require to pay. I've been to Bamburgh many times. I've still never been into the castle and still enjoyed my time there. It's not vital. BAILEY So, we've spoke about places to go for a nice day out, for like walking, but what if you want both. What if you want to walk and do a bit of shopping? well... there's Durham. EXT. DURHAM B-roll of Durham leading up to the cathedral and then the city centre. BLACK SCREEN BAILEY So, within half an hour of sunderland, We've found two Bamburgh and Alnwick come onto screen places to go for a walk with the family and we have also found somewhere Durham comes onto screen to walk and do a bit of shopping. But what if you just want to shop and stuff your face till you drop? well there's Newcastle.

BAILEY With nightclubs and restaurants dotted all around the quayside, it's not hard to find somewhere to go in newcastle. As Well as that you can have a stroll along the river and look at some of the bridges. However, it is still mainly known for its bustling restaurants, the great food and also, the shopping centre. Online drone footage of Newcastle plays. BAILEY So, Sunderland isn't such a bad area, there's so much around you, so much you can do. However the people of Sunderland still believe that there area isn't a good place to live. So what's changing for Sunderland? EXT. SUNDERLAND footage of Sunderland Centre and Shipyards BAILEY well. Alnwick and Bamburgh have their pretty views,Newcastle and Durham have their shops and maybe a walk.But Sunderland its changing itself completely. Taking itself from a city with no purpose,its having a massive investment into the old shipyarding area. In partnership with Fulwell 73, Sunderland and Sunderland University, One of the largest filmmaking complexes within europe is going to be built on the Shipyards. This will transform Sunderland from a city with almost no purpose. To a City that's pretty much known everywhere. It's going to be exponential the growth that Sunderland is going to have. For that, it's exciting me and it's exciting others. No longer do we have to travel to London for work. We can stay right at home, in the north.

I can see now that in the future, theres going to be no restraints holding anyone back and they can achieve anything they want. Are you ready for this? I am.
